It is DOUBLE points Night at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (October 19, 2004) After having a week off due to the "Battle of the Badges" and the Goodyear Challenge Late100 racers, New Smyrna racers are ready for some action especially with DOUBLE points on the line. With only a few weeks left to the 2004 racing season, Championships are on the line. David Rogers, who won't be there this Saturday due to a racing accident at Orlando SpeedWorld, looks to have another Super Late Model Championship under his belt. Even with double points, it does not look like anyone can touch Rogers. Eric Black, who has been absent of late, is second in points with 268 followed by Jacksonville's Guy Thomas with 220. B.J. McLeod and Wayne McCall round out the top five. Don Hess holds a 100 point lead over newcomer Troy Atkins. But not far behind Atkins is Mark Smith who lead the points at one time this year. Josh Schmidt and Phillip Bessette round out the top five. Sam Watts stands sixth in points and has one win under his belt in the Late Model division. Dewayne Barrus, Alan Bruns, and Randy Dye run seventh, eighth, and ninth. But there is a three-way tie in tenth and any one of the three could take the lead. Tied with 116 points each are David Pletka, Ernest Worley, and Chuck Burkhalter. Bobby Blake leads Matt Wheeler in the Open Wheel Modified division. Blake has 520 points to Wheeler's 436. Mark Vandevender, Ed Kuhel and Brad May round out the top five. Dave Savicki, Chad Pierce, Jerry Symons, Alan Bruns and Jim Flynn round out the top ten. Donny Williams holds a 120 points lead in the Sportsman division over second place Dale Clouser at 580 points. Williams and Clouser have gone nose-to-nose this year as both would like to be the 2004 Champion. Mike Soukup has done an outstanding job in his Sportsman holding third in points followed by John Nusbaum and Chris Peludat. Only six points separate sixth and seventh place Paul Hudson and Bruce McGonigal. Ken Lewton, Tom Gamache and Cory Kaiser round out the top ten in Sportsman. Ron Whaley could sit out the rest of the year and still win the Super Stock Championship as he leads with 836 points. Josh Wronkowski sits second with 548 points followed by Barry Parks with 512 points. Jeff Colburn and Jack Lenzen run fourth and fifth only separated by 20 points. James Adams, Charlie Collins, Chuck Smith, Steven Dembinsky and Danny Lester round out the top ten. Ted Vulipus tops the Mini Stock division with 750 points followed by Brian Bellaw with 636. Chad Carpenter, Alli Owens, and Ben Cutler Jr. round out the top five. Mark Broat, Rex Christensen, Ron Dubeau, Rick Gamache and Ronald Karto Jr. round out the top ten. Also on the program Saturday night will be the ever-popular Strictly Stocks. Plus there will be a KIDS Bike Race and a Sack Race. Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. General admission is 10.00; students and seniors $5.00, children 11 and under free. Have an opinion on this story?
