Citrus Features Final Super Late Model Twin 50's Saturday | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 10/20/04) Saturday night will be the final night for the local Late Models to make some noise as their race for the 2004 Championship Crown will come to an end with Super Late Model Twin 50’s. Time trials will set up the lineup for the first race. The winner’s purse will increase for the second 50 lapper plus each driver will receive normal points in each race which will double their points opportunity. The triple 50’s changed the top five but the 42 drivers who have participated in points races in 2004. They will be chasing Herb Neumann Jr., rookie Daniel Webster, Mr. Checkered Flag Wayne Anderson, Danny Johnson and Rex Struble in the race for the crown. Mike Bresnahan, Scott Grossenbacher, Dale Sanders, John Chance and Raymond Lovelady are trying to lock in top ten positions for the year.
Super Stock drivers have been chasing young Joe Viverito for most of the season. He is still looking for his first trip to Victory Lane. Runner up Richie Smith trails Viverito by 227 points with only two weeks to catch the young hot shoe and he too is looking for his first Super Stock win. Ernie Reed and Stephen Anderson have made three trips apiece to the Winner’s Circle and are just 40 points apart in the race for third. James Hendrickson is another driver who has depended on consistency to keep him in the hunt with no wins this season. Rounding out the top ten are Brett Flagg, Steve King, John Makula, J.T. Renau and Brad Lyon. Fifty four Super Stocks have been in the points hunt.
The Mini Stock leader Jim Curry has been holding off George Neumann and Chris Hooker for the entire season and he too only has one feature win. Neumann is still looking for his first win and Chris Hooker has 5 but has been plagued with DNF’s on more occasions than he cares to count which has kept him in third just 51 points behind Neumann. Mike Lawhorn, Jason Reynolds, Johnny Siner, Jeff Pittsley, Chad Johnson, Richard Stroup and Steve Griffin are still in the hunt for top ten spots with just two races left on the schedule. Fifty Three Mini Stocks have raced at Citrus this season. They will wrap up the season with a 50 lap feature in the Halloween Special on Oct. 30th.
Bobby Taylor has held onto the Hobby Stock top spot for two weeks now but Tommy Smith is closing with 34 points separating the top two. Dean Lawyer and Alvin Williamson are in a 41 point differential in the race for third. Bill Ryan holds out in fifth, another top gun that has yet to make it to the winner’s column. Curtis Neumann has 5 wins but he is another driver that spent a lot of time shaking the motor gremlins and seems to be on track now with a 29 point lead over Todd Downs and 30 point lead over Neil Herne in the race for sixth. Rounding out the top ten are Bob Becker and Frank Stromquist over the 84 car field of contenders.
Jerry Hoover has been showing the way to the Thunder Stock crown for quite a few weeks and with only two weeks left in the season. Steven Steindurf is still in the hunt trailing Hoover by 142 points. Rick Badessa seems to have a lock on third over Louie Cioe. Victory Shahid comes off his only win of the season last week just 4 points behind Wayne Heater in the race for fifth. Rounding out the top ten are Mike Dubbs, John Donahue, Ray White and Chris Cramer in a four way run for 7th. There have been 60 registered Thunder Stocks in 2004.
4 Cylinder Bombers will wrap up Saturday night’s action in their next to the last point’s race of the season. The Auburndale modified Bombers are not running for points in this division. Clark Pittsley is the undisputed 2004 champion over the 23 regulars since the beginning of the season. Rusty Adams, Rick Fort, Justin Durbin, Dan Sanderson, Harold Barup, John DeGeorge, Mike Curry, Festus Barup and Jeff Pittsley round out the top ten.
Over 350 different race drivers have raced at Citrus County Speedway during the 2004 season in regular point’s battles. Several traveling series has pushed that car count over the 400 mark which is a record for this 49 year old racing venue. The Halloween “Trick or Treat Enduro 150” will add more to that number on the final night of regular racing next Saturday, October 30th. Have an opinion on this story?
