Hold on to your HATS, IT IS THE 2004 BATTLE OF THE BADGES at NSS | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (October 13, 2004) New Smyrna Speedway proudly presents the 2004 Battle of the Badges this Saturday, October 16th. Not only will the Sheriffs see plenty of oval school bus racing action but this year for the first time ever, they will hold a demo derby. Now, if you have a bone to pick with someone, a demo derby is just the right cup of tea for alittle beating and banging action. Sheriffs that will be driving in this year's 2004 school bus race are Sheriff Charlie Aycock of Osceola County; Sheriff Jeff Dawsy of Citrus County; Sheriff Don Eslinger of Seminole County, Sheriff Ben Johnson of Volusia County; Sheriff Bob Milner of Bradford County, and Sheriff Phil Williams of Brevard County. In the demo derby, not only will some of the School Bus drivers participate but also about 25 safety officers. This year's event is being sponsored by Bright House Networks. The Sheriffs hold this event annually to help raise funds for the Florida's Sheriffs Youth Ranches which include a network of four residential child-care campuses and two youth camps for underprivileged children. Along with the Battle of the Badges will be the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100. Although this traveling tour has seen it's share of rainouts and races called due to hurricanes, this Saturday looks to be perfect weather for one of the hottest series in the state. Going into this Saturday's race, Jason Boyd holds a 24 point lead over second place Joe Winchell. These two have traded paint and had the points lead during the year. Not far behind Winchell is Rich Clouser who is still in the hunt for his first Goodyear Challenge Late Model win. Clouser was the 2003 Rookie of the Year and also second in points in 2003 and is definitely looking for a Championship. Clouser only stands 41 points behind Boyd. Martin Pierce, winner of the last Goodyear race at New Smyrna Speedway, stands fourth followed by Jerry Artuso, our Canadian racer, in fifth. Chuck Burkhalter is well known in the racing world and stands sixth in points and is looking to up his points stand. Tate Pierce, Bill Ostriker, Greg Kaouk, and Steve Smith round out the top ten. Qualifying for the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100 will be at 6:45 pm. with racing action beginning at 7:30. Also on the program will be the Mini Cups, always a great show. The regular FASCAR divisions will return to action on Saturday, October 23rd. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
