| Five Flags Speedway recovering from Hurricane Ivan | Local racing enthusiasts who would like to take part in the recovery efforts at Five Flags Speedway, after the facility suffered serious damage from Hurricane Ivan, will soon have an opportunity to do just that.
In response to the many members of the racing community who have contacted the track to offer their assistance, promoter Tim Bryant has scheduled a cleanup day this Saturday, October 9th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. A lunch and refreshments will be served to those pitching in to help. The participants are asked to bring gloves and rakes as there is a lot of debris to be removed so repairs can begin in preparation for the 37th annual Snowball Derby in December.
The speedway office and ticket booth were just two of the structures destroyed in the storm. A temporary office will be onsite this week. The staff has been operating out of the press box/control tower that made it through the storm intact. Anyone having concerns about their Snowball Derby entries or reserved tickets will be pleased to know that all records were removed from the office before Hurricane Ivan
Both events scheduled for the month of October at the historic track have been canceled.
The USCS Sprint Cars were slated to run on October 8th and the final Blizzard Series race was on the schedule the following week.
Eddie Mercer and David Hole were the top two Late Model drivers as of the final Blizzard Series race on August 27, and have been awarded provisional starting spots in the Snowball Derby. The final regular race of the season was held on September 3rd and those leading in points after that event have been declared divisional champions for the 2004 season. Congratulations go to: Joel Lesley Jr. – Bombers, James Ziniwiecz – Spectators, Steve Campbell – Super Stocks, and Sammy McMullen – Modifieds.
The next event at the Pine Forest Road speedplant will be an open practice on November 20. Drivers in all classes will have the opportunity to prepare for the Snowball Derby and fans will be admitted into the grandstands for free.
The first annual Green Flag Party will kick off the Snowball Derby activities on December 1 with an autograph session with the drivers, as well as entertainment, and refreshments. Practice and racing will begin the following day and the week will be capped off with Sunday´s short track classic, the 37th annual Snowball Derby, which is already drawing entries from all across the country.
