Despite Damage Citrus Will Run Saturday | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 9/30/04) After being hurricaned out for the fourth time in six weeks, and receiving more damage from Jeanne, Citrus County Speedway counts its blessings that they are probably better off than many tracks in Florida. Repair crews have been working on downed wiring, small building repairs and replacing lighting again after the wrath of Tropical Storm Jeanne hit the county hard. Promoter Billy Hooker continues to take a positive attitude about the situation and explains it away as the cost of doing business. Through this approach to the 49 year old facility Hooker is intent on keeping it running and making the best of what remains of the racing season with an eye on better things to come as Citrus approaches its 50th anniversary.
Citrus County Speedway will kick off the month of October this Saturday with the UPM Modified 100, a Sportsman 40, Figure 8’s, and Open Wheel Lites, on the special card. Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers get back on track in their final five weeks of point races for 2004 this weekend as well. With all the recent weeks of rainouts the drivers are having difficulty getting a handle on how to recover from all this down time. That was apparent two weeks ago after a two week layoff when they finally got to race and over anxiety set in.
The whole month of October will be full of special races, featuring a Late Model Triple 50 on October 9th, a Modified 30 and a makeup Sportsman 40 on October 16th, another Late Model Twin 50 and “Dare to Win Night” on October 23rd and the Happy Halloween “Trick or Treat” Enduro 150 for $5,000 to win and the final night of racing for the individual championships.
Wrapping up the regular season will be the 2nd Leg of the Triple Crown L.M. 125 on November 6th. The TBARA Sprints, a 50 Lap Figure 8, Hobby Stock 50, and a Powder Puff race will be added the final race for the Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers.
The Winter Spectacular will close out the 49th racing season with a Thursday night practice session on December 2nd. Late Model Qualifying, a 75 lap Late Model Race, 75 Lap Mini Stock, 50 Lap Super Stock a Demolition Derby and a Bar B Q on Friday December 3rd. Saturday December 4th will feature the Winter Spectacular Late Model 150, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks. Merry Christmas and come celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2005.
