Citrus Co. Speedway Races JEANNE'D Out | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 90/25/04) With Hurricane Jeanne approaching the East Coast of Florida on Saturday night not too many fans or racers were too inspired to make the trip to Citrus County Speedway Saturday night. The outer rain bands of the storm were affecting all of Central Florida from coast to coast in the early evening hours. Many were making preparations for the 4th major hurricane in six weeks and after the learning experience from the previous storms it was something most Floridians took to heart.
What if you scheduled a major race and nobody came? With the Saturday highlighted race billed as a Late Model Twin 50 it was apparent at 5:30 p.m. that most of the out of town racers weren’t willing to take the gamble to make the trip. Several drivers were committed to their jobs and employers that kept them from coming and others had commitments to family and property that certainly took priority. Most of the race tracks in Florida were in the same condition. Promoter Billy Hooker pulled the plug after rain showers and high winds interrupted pre race practice several times the weather bureau reported continuing deterating conditions.
This was the fifth weather related cancellation in seven weeks for Citrus County Speedway. With only seven weeks left in the regular season and a full schedule already setup to make up for previous rainouts, it is doubtful that there will be a make up for this race. The revised schedule has been posted on most of the racing web sites as well as www.citruscountyspeedway.com. This Saturday night the track is expecting the UPM Modified 100, Florida Open Wheel Lites, another attempt at Figure 8’s and a Sportsman 40, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and the 4 cylinder Bombers. Weather permitting and barring any more storms like Bonnie, Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne Citrus will be back in action Saturday night October 2nd.
