Kids Bike Races top Program at New Smyrna Speedway August 14th | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (August 10, 2004) Mark your calendars for a very special Saturday night on August 14 at New Smyrna Speedway. Not only will the kids get to have their first bike race of the year but there will be a Mutt Race which is something never done before at New Smyrna Speedway. The Southeast Volusia Humane Society, which needs some help, will present the Mutt Race and all pre-sale tickets bought from the Humane Society will see 50% donated back to the animals. Also fans on Saturday night, if they would like to help, can bring kitten and puppy chow for the animals. "We get alot of adult food for cats and dogs donated but we just don't get much kitten and puppy food and we desperately need it," said Jennifer who works the back pit gate at New Smyrna Speedway and also at the Southeast Volusia Humane Society. Advanced Discount Auto Parts have already donated the new bikes for the kids bike races. Some lucky boy and girl will win a brand new 20" bike plus one little one will win a 10" bike. All kids love to race their bikes especially on a stockcar racing track. The Super Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Mini Stock and Strictly Stocks will also see some action Saturday. The Super Lates and Modifieds had last weekend off for the race at USA International in Lakeland but the Rain Gods were not happy and rained out all racing. They return this weekend with David Rogers leading the points for the Super Lates. Eric Black, Guy Thomas, B.J. McCleod, and Wayne McCall fill out the top five. Brent Hobbs, Rick Bates, Dick Anderson, Fai Skinner and Jacob Warren complete the top ten. Don Hess continues to lead the way for the Late Models but Mark Smith is putting up a valiant try of catchig Hess. Right now Hess has a 72 point lead over Smith but as we all know, that can change anytime. Troy Atkins comes in third followed by Josh Schmidt and Phillip Bessette. Dewayne Barrus, Alan Bruns, Randy Dye, Sam Watts, and David Pletka round out the top ten. Bobby Blake still holds the points lead for the Modifieds but not that far behind is Matt Wheeler who would love nothing more than to win a New Smyrna Championship. Mark Vandevender, Ed Kuhel, and Brad May round out the top five. Dave Savicki, Chad Pierce, Alan Bruns, Tank Tucker and David Hite complete the top ten. Donny Williams has built up a fair large lead over Dale Clouser in the Sportsman division. Williams has 624 points compared to Clouser's 504. This could be a hard battle down to the wire. Chris Peludat, Paul Hudson and John Nusbaum complete the top five. Mike Soukup, Bruce McGonigal Jr., Ken Lewton, Tom Gamache, and Cory Kaiser round out the top ten. Ron Whaley leads the Super Stocks and pretty much has the title locked up if nothing happens to his car. Whaley leads with 716 points compared to Josh Wronkowski's 544. Josh Colburn, who is currently third, has basically called it quits and will not return to the Super Stock class. Barry Parks stands fourth with Jack Lenzen in fifth. James Adams, Charlie Collins, Chuck Smith, Stephen Dembinsky an Mike Soukup round out the top ten. Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulpius leads the way for the Mini Stocks but Brian Bellaw has not given up quite yet. This race could go either way since both Vulpius and Bellaw have previous Championships under their belt. Chad Carpenter stands third but it will still be a few weeks before Carpenter returns from a very hard crash a few weeks ago. Also involved in the same crash was Alli Owens who got up, dusted herself off, and got right back into a racecar. Mark Broat rounds out the top five. Ben Cutler Jr., Ron Dubeau, Rex Christensen, Rick Gamache, and Ron Karto Jr. round out the top ten. Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR415 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna in beautiful Samsula Florida.
