HALF-PINTS TAKE TO THE HIGH BANKS AT FIVE FLAGS SPEEDWAY ON FRIDAY | Two-wheeled speedsters will join the bi-weekly warriors in competition this Friday at Five Flags Speedway.
It will be Kid’s Night at the high-banked ½ mile speedplant and bikes and Mini-Sportsman cars will be added to the regular program. Youngsters are encouraged to bring their bicycles for some peddle-powered competition as they take part in the historic track’s celebration of Five Decades of Speed. Prizes will be awarded to the competing kids.
The popular Mini-Sportsman will also join the Bombers, Spectators, Super Stocks, and Modifieds in a night of high speed action and the popular Happy Hour admission prices will be in effect with kids 11 and under admitted for free.
The Super Stock division has had six different winners in eight races and 2002 champion, Jessie Reid is the only driver to repeat with three victories including one in the last event held on July 23rd. Fellow Mobilians Mike Maddox, Terry Britt, and Steven Davis have been victorious in the Super Stocks along with Mike Williamson, and Robert Royce. The first two drivers in the point’s chase, Steve Campbell of Pensacola and Chris Cotto of Milton have consistently run near the front and will be going for the elusive first place finish on Friday.
Spectator division leader, Earl Polk won the first race of the year and is hoping to repeat this week. In a tight point’s battle, he leads three-time winner James Ziniewicz by 25 points. The winner of the last race, Jimmy Hardin also has three wins to his credit while Mike Austin has one victory under his belt in the highly competitive class.
Tommy Aaron won his second Modified feature in a row last time out but has a lot of catching up to do if he wants to unseat point’s leader Sammy McMullen who has finished up front five times this season. Louisiana's Tim Martin has a lone victory in the fast open-wheeled machines.
In the ever-exciting Bomber class, Joel Lesley Jr. is the only three-time victor and leads the point’s chase by over 100 markers. Mike Kitchen who sits in second place behind Lesley, crossed the finish line first in the last race but was disqualified during the post-race inspection. Randy Thompson and Bo Resmondo both have a pair of victories in the "Crunch Bunch" division while Tommy Lambert Jr. won the season opener.
The Mini-Sportsman cars, weighing only 750 pounds and powered by 20 hp Briggs & Stratton engines, literally scream around the Pine Forest Road oval. With their 67-inch wheelbase and 10 inch tires, the micro machines appear to be turning Daytona-like speeds and are very popular with the fans.
Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and for those fans arriving before 7:00 the Happy Hour price of $5 will apply. After 7:00, the admission price will be $7. Practice begins at 5:00 with thefirstracestartingpromptlyat800.For more information go to www.fiveflagsspeedway.com or call the track office at 944-8400. Have an opinion on this story?
