Watermelons and Winged Sprints set for August 7 at NSS | Watermelons and Winged Sprints set for August 7 at New Smyrna Samsula, Fla. (August 2, 2004) Nothing in the world like watermelon and winged sprints. Fans this Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway will get the best of both worlds - watermelon and winged sprints. For all the kids ages 12 and under, there will be a watermelon eating contest at intermission on Saturday, August 7. Now we all know how much kids love watermelon and are always asking for more so this is your chance guys - the more you eat, the better your chance of winning. Along with the watermelon eating contest will be the Tampa Bay Area Racing Association Winged Sprints in their final appearance in 2004 at New Smyrna Speedway. These ground pounding, earth shaking monsters know how to wing their way around a track and they love New Smyrna. Wendy Mathis got a feature win last weekend at Ocala Speedway so you never know if she can make it two in a row at New Smyrna. Dude Teate leads the points for the TBARA with 504 points followed by Doug Heveron with 472 points. David Slawiak stands third with 451 points followed by Wayne Reutimann Sr.with 444. Keith Butler rounds out the top five with 437 points. There is only a 74 point difference between fifth place Gary Gimmler at 382 points and tenth place Wayne Reutimann Jr. at 308 points. Coming in seventh, eighth, and ninth are John Gilbert Jr., Mark Gimmler, and Stan Butler. The Mini Cups will also run on Saturday night after having a double header last weekend at Orlando SpeedWorld.and Doug Smith seeing Winner's Circle twice. Expect to see a good number of Mini Cups since they love New Smyrna Speedway. Also in action Saturday night will be the Late Models, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock and Strictly Stock. The Super Late Models and Open Wheel Modifieds have the night off due to the Florida State Late Model Championship at Lakeland's USA International and a 75 lap Penske Racing Shocks United Pro Modified event. The Super Lates and Mods will return on August 14. Leading the way for the Late Models is Don Hess who holds a 52 point lead over Mark Smith. Standing 28 points behind Smith is Troy Atkins with 360 points. Josh Schmidt, who was involved in the mass heat race crash of two weeks ago, comes in fourth with 320 points followed by fifth place Phillip Bessette with 192 points. Dewayne Barrus, Alan Bruns, Randy Dye, David Pletka and Ernest Worley complete the top ten. Donny Williams leads the way for the Sportsman division but will absent this Saturday night as his son Michael Williams gets married. Williams has built up enough lead that one night won't hurt his championship hunt. Dale Clouser comes in second in points with 464 followed by Chris Peludat at 344 points. But Peludat has been working on a new motor which has given Paul Hudson enough time to come within four points of Peludat at 340 points. John Nusbam is fifth with 328 points. Mike Soukup, Bruce McGonigal, Ken Lewton, Cory Kaiser and Tom Gamache round out the top ten. Ron Whaley leads the Super Stocks with 676 points with last week's winner Josh Wronkowski in second with 508 points. Jeff Colburn is third with 488 points followed by Barry Parks with 400 points. Rounding out the top five is Jack Lenzen with 352 points. James Adams, Charlie Collins, Chuck Smith, Stephen Dembinsky and Mike Soukup complete the top ten. Coming in third is Chad Carpenter followed by Alli Owens and Mark Broat. Ben Cutler Jr., Ron Dubeau, Rex Christensen, Rick Gamache and Ronald Karto Jr. complete the top five.
