Corteco Gaskets/GulfCoast Modifieds Set to Fire Up Second Half of Season! | By Rick Warren
After taking a short breather after the first four races, the Corteco Gaskets / GulfCoast Modifieds rev up the second half of the season on July 31, at Sunshine Speedway. The series, which was formed in an attempt to keep the cost of racing within reach of all racers, had a very successful start to the 2004 season.
The series has had 4 races, and 4 different winners. Race #1 saw Dwayne Dempsey take the win at Bronson Motor Speedway. Race #2 was held at Sunshine Speedway, and Mike Hinegardner took top honors at his home track. Race #3 had Lee Collins bring home the win at Charlotte County Speedway. Teddy Nelson had his day in the spotlight as he captured the win in race #4, also at Charlotte County Speedway.
The series also took on a new look with the addition of some new faces in key positions. The addition of Margi Nanney as series Director has been a very welcome and positive addition. The position of race director has been placed in the capable hands of Sue Coles, another great addition to the Corteco / GulfCoast team. The always difficult job of running the Technical Inspectors position, is being handled by Smitty Smith, well known and respected in Fl. racing circles.
Another big draw for the racers to this series is the point fund that will be paid at the end of the season. The Points Champion will be awarded $5000 for their effort, and has drawn some serious competition. Lee Collins is the current leader in the point standings, followed closely by Mike Hinegardner and Dwayne Dempsey. Hinegardner is also leading in the Rookie of the Year competition, with a slight lead over Chris Escott.
The series also has cash awards at each race for Fastest Qualifier and the Hard Charger Award. The series has had over 50 different racers participate this year, and expects to continue to draw a good field of racers at each event.
With 4 races remaining on the schedule, the competion is really heating up. July 31 at Sunshine Speedway in St. Petersburg will be the start of the second half of competition, and has all the earmarks of a great race. You dont want to miss this race.
If you like short track racing, if you are a fan of open wheel racing, if you like great competition, Sunshine Speedway on July 31 is the place to be. See You There !!
