Points Races are definitely getting HOT at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (July 20, 2004) All divisions except Strictly Stock are on the program for New Smyrna Speedway this Saturday night. The Strictly Stocks were given the night off so they could participate in the 25 lap, $500.00 to win race at Orlando SpeedWorld at Crash-A-Rama. David Rogers leads the way for the Super Late Models and really does not have anyone close behind him. David, who should know New Smyrna Speedway like the back of his hand, found a very hard charging B.J. McLeod on his tail last week but B.J. will be absent this Saturday as he runs the All American Challenge Series race at Desoto Super Speedway. Eric Black stands second in points and has been very consistent. Guy Thomas out of Jacksonville comes in third with B.J. McLeod in fourth. Wayne McCall rounds out the top five in the Super Lates. Brent Hobbs, Rick Bates, Dick Anderson, Fain Skinner, and Dick Ruckh round out the top ten. The Late Model field has been growing this year and each week the car count gets better. Don Hess leads the Late Model points followed by Mark Smith, Josh Schmidt, Troy Atkins and Phillip Bessette. DaWayne Barrus, Randy Dye, David Pletka, Ernest Worley and Chad Pierce round out the top ten. Watch these guys as they put on a great show each week with A.J. Curreli winning his first feature win last Saturday followed by Travis Wilson. Bobby Blake is looking for his second Open Wheel Modified Championship but Matt Wheeler is not just going to give it to him. Wheeler puts just alittle more pressure on Blake each week. Mark Vandevender comes in third in points for the Modifieds followed by Ed Kuhel and Chad Pierce. Dave Savicki, Brad May, Jim "Hoot" Flynn, David Hite and Alan Bruns round out the top ten. Bruns also did double duty last weekend when he brought out his Late Model for a litttle late model action. Donny Williams basically has the Sportsman Championship in his pocket. Williams has built up a huge lead and will be very hard to catch if anyone can catch him. Dale Clouser is certainly going to give it his best to try and catch Williams Chris Peludat is working on a new motor and should return soon and watch for him to chase both Clouser and Williams. Paul Hudson has done very good this year and it shows with his fourth place position in points. Rounding out the top five is John Nusbaum. Bruce McGonigal, Ken Lewton, Mike Soukup, Cory Kaiser, and Earl Beckner round out the top ten. Ron Whaley has his heart set on being the 2004 Super Stock Champion but Jeff Colburn does also. These two are beating and banging their way to the top for that golden crown. Josh Wronkowski runs third and has definitely given it his best also for the Championship. Barry Parks and Jack Lenzen complete the top five. Charlie Collins, James Adams, Stephen Dembinsky, Chuck Smith and Mike Soukup round out the top ten. Brian Bellaw, 2003 Late Model Champion, and Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulpius, 2003 Mini Stock Champion, are in a heated battle for the Mini Stock Championship. Standing only 32 points apart, this could go either way. Chad Carpenter comes in third followed by Alli Owens in fourth and Mark Broat in fifth. Ron Dubeau, Ben Cutler Jr., Ronald Karto Jr., Rex Christensen, and Rick Gamache round out the top ten. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR415 between I-95 and I-4 eight miles west of New Smyrna in beautiful Samsula, Florida. Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $10.00, students and seniors are $5.00, children 11 and under are FREE. Have an opinion on this story?
