Action can't get much HOTTER On or Off the Track at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (July 15, 2004) After last Saturday night's hot action and the win by a nose of Brian Bellaw over Ted Vulpius in the Mini Stock division, fans will be on the watch for close racing action. This Saturday night show is sponsored by Advanced Discount Auto Parts and promises plenty of action. Last Saturday we had to run the Super Lates and Late Models together since there were only 2 Super Lates in the pits. But hopefully this weekend more will be back from vacation and will run their own division race. David Rogers leads the points for the Super Late division followed by Eric Black, B.J. McLeod, Guy Thomas and Wayne McCall. Don Hess leads the points for the Late Model division and seems to be on a roll as of late. Hess has been on a pretty good win streak but now it is time for some good ole fashion race challenging. Josh Schmidt, Mark Smith, Troy Atkins and Dewayne Barrus all are looking to add points to their standings and hopefully stop the Hess winning streak. Donny Williams has such a lead now in the Sportsman division it will be hard to stop him but Dale Clouser is certainly giving it his all. Clouser has now pulled up into second in points behind Williams but Williams would have to miss a number of races for anyone to catch him. Also in the hunt for the Sportsman championship is Chris Peludat, Paul Hudson, and John Nusbaum. Bobby Blake leads the Open Wheel Modified division over Matt Wheeler, Mark Vandevender, Ed Kuhel and Chad Pierce. But you never know until the fat lady sings who will win this championship. Brian Bellaw and Ted Vulpius will certainly give fans their money's worth as they fight for the Mini Stock Championship. Last Saturday night they put on one of the best Mini Stock or anykind of stock car race as of late. Going side-by-side, door-to-door, never touching and Bellaw winning by just a hair over Vulpius. A great show and two great racers. Bellaw leads the Mini Stock points with Vulpius in second followed by Chad Carpenter, Alli Owens and Ron Dubeau. Ron Whaley has one mission, to win the Super Stock Championship this year. But last Saturday night was a wild night for the Super Stocks as Jeff Colburn also wants that championship. Colburn drove alittle "nuts" trying to catch up to Whaley and win but it just did not happen. Luckily no one was seriously hurt but it was a crazy, wild night. Also in the look for the championship is Josh Wronkowski, Barry Parks and Jack Lenzen. Pit Gates will open at 4 p.m. with grandstands opening at 6 p.m. All divisions are racing. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $10.00, $5.00 for seniors and students, children 11 and under are FREE. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR415 and SR44 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna in beautfiul Samsula, Fla. Have an opinion on this story?
