Super Late Models Back at Citrus Saturday | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 7/6/04) The fans asked for it and Citrus County Speedway has taken a whole new look at the schedule of events for the final half of the season. In response the Super Late Models are getting a total of 7 weeks of racing action for points. There will be three 30 lappers, three twin 50’s and a triple 50 in that schedule plus two series races. The month of July will see a 30 lap regular point’s race this weekend to restart the season after taking last week off, a Twin 50 on the 24th and the Florida Pro Series race on July 31st. The fans wanted the Late Models back more frequently and that’s what promoter Billy Hooker is giving them.
Other additions to the schedule are an Enduro 150 and a Demolition Derby on September 11th. Figure 8’s will run on the first Saturday of every month plus Pro Modifieds, Open Wheel Lites, Sportsman 40’s running monthly, a Friday night Bar B Q on the 23rd of July, a Back to School Bash for the kids on August 7th with an autograph session and the return of the Figure 8’s, the Second Leg of the Triple Crown Super Late Model 125 in November and the TBARA Sprints closing out the season on November 13th. It’s going to be an action packed second half of 2004 with both fans and drivers benefiting from the new look at Citrus.
Wayne Anderson has a seven point lead over Scott Grossenbacher after only three races in the Late Model regular division for the season. John Chance, Rex Struble and Mike Bresnahan round out the top five. Herb Neumann Jr., rookie Daniel Webster, Shane Nichols, Danny Johnson and Keith Zavrel join the top ten out of 26 drivers in the hunt. They should be out to better their position with more races on the schedule making it more interesting.
Balancing out this weekend’s action will be the Mini Stock see saw battle for the crown with Jim Curry back on top and George Neumann moving up to second just 24 points out of the top spot and looking for his fourth championship crown in the division. Chris Hooker slipped to third 33 points out of second. Mike Lawhorn and Richard Stroup battle for fourth with just 22 points separating them. Thirty-two Mini’s are in the hunt.
Bobby Taylor and Tommy Smith share the Hobby Stock point lead after their last outing had them finishing third and fourth in that order. Neil Herne and Dean Lawyer have another close battle going for third and fourth with only a 9 point separation. Bill Ryan holds out in fifth with Alvin Williamson, coming off his first win, just six points behind and Curtis Neumann 20 points off the pace. Fifty-four cars are in this race for the crown.
With fifty-two Thunder Stocks registered for 2004 and Rick Badessa holds the lead for the championship for a third week with Jerry Hoover just 19 points away. Another close race for third and fourth is showing Steve Stinedurf just five points up on Louie Cioe. Lee Keller took a real hit when he lost two weeks in points after dominating the division for the first 1/3rd of the season. He is definitely not out of the hunt just nineteen points out of fourth in the race.
Clark Pittsley continues to hold a very comfortable lead in the Four Cylinder Bomber division. John DeGeorge hasn’t raced for quite a while and it is rumored he has dropped out of the division but still holds a 200 point lead in the race for second. Harold Barup holds onto third with four time winner Justin Durbin chasing him and seems to be the hot shoe to watch out for in the division. Rick Fort is 38 points behind Durbin in fifth.
Seven divisions will turn it on Saturday night as Citrus County Speedway opens the second half of the season with a whole new look. Citrus is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 on US 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds in Inverness. The grandstand gates open at 4 and the first heat will get the green flag at 6 p.m. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
