Open Wheel Lites & Mod Squard on Full Citrus Race Card | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 6/23/04) Thursday night will be open practice for Citrus County Speedway in preparation for a full, seven division race card Saturday night. Thirteen to fifteen Open Wheel Lites make another run at the 3/8ths mile with Ron Towels coming off a win in May. He’ll join the rest of the 5/8ths scale, motorcycle engine driven, open wheel 30’s and 40’s coupes and sedans in heat and feature action Saturday night.
John Grimm comes in this week leading the local point race for the Mod Squad by 23 over Billy Bechtelheimer who took his first win two weeks ago. Two time winner Harold Cannon holds out in third, determined to regain his early season point lead. Mickey Kempgens holds out in fourth, thirty points up on Glenn Erwin and Mike Wilson who won four weeks ago. This will be the Modifieds 7th appearance this season running every other week.
Super Street Stock point leader Jo Jo Viverito comes into this week’s race with a comfortable 125 point lead but is still looking for his first win of the season. He is showing six top five finishes and one top ten out of eight races for the season. James Hendrickson has a 40 point lead over Stephen Anderson who has seen Victory Lane twice this season. Richie Smith holds out in fourth, 69 points up on two time winner Ernie Reed who has seen several DNF’s hold him back.
Chris Hooker came off a third place finish last week and moved back into the Mini Stock point lead nine points up on Jim Curry who came off his first win ever two weeks ago to finish 9th last week. Three time champion George Neumann is third and is still looking for his first feature win on the season. Mike Lawhorn and Richard Stroup are in a tight battle for fourth.
Tommy Smith still leads the Hobby Stock point’s race despite a DNF last week. Bobby Taylor moved to within three points of the leader with a ninth place finish over the 23 car field. Dean Lawyer holds out in third after taking his third feature win of the season last week. Neil Herne Jr. finished third and moved ahead of Curtis Neumann in the race for fourth after Neumann was unable to make the race last week.
Rick Badessa has a 30 point lead over Jerry Hoover in Thunder Stock action. Badessa held on with a 5th last week while Jerry Hoover suffered a DNF. Louie Cioe holds out in third and is still looking for his first trip to Victory Lane. Lee Keller should be back this week to defend his fourth spot in the point’s race after being suspended for last week’s race. Steve Stinedurf has a lock on fifth, just 27 points out of fourth.
Four Cylinder Bombers will be chasing Clark Pittsley for the rest of the season as he comes into this week with an 896 point lead. Despite not racing in the division any more John DeGeorge has a 104 point lead over Harold Barup who suffered a D.Q. last week. Justin Durbin and Rick Fort are in a pretty tight battle for fourth.
All seven divisions are on the race card for this week’s action. Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles South of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds.
