Modifieds & Mini Cup on Full Race Card at Citrus County | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 6/9/04) Saturday night the regular season at Citrus County Speedway gets back on track after a great Powell Memorial 150 last Friday night. Fans will see the return of the Modifieds in heats and a 30 lap feature run plus the Mini Cup Cars, Super Streets, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 cylinder Bombers with over 225 laps of action at the Action Attraction.
John Grimm moved into the modified point lead after his win two weeks ago moving two time winner Harold Cannon out of the top spot to fourth in the point race. Billy Bechtelheimer and Mickie Kempgens moved up to second and third respectively with Glen Ervin Jr. balancing out the top five. There have been four different winners in five races at Citrus to include Grimm, Cannon with two, Mike Wilson and Robert Ray. Twenty drivers are in the race for the 2004 Citrus Modified Championship Crown.
The Mini Cup Cars always put on an interesting show in their ½ scale Nextel Cup cars with motorcycle engines moving them at unbelievable speeds. They have averaged 17 cars per show in their previous appearances at Citrus. Doug Smith has been the man to watch with 2 victories while the rest of the field has been in there getting experience and giving him something to think about. Some young talent is beginning to show there is a challenge to Doug’s expertise and they are coming.
Joe Viverito heads up the Super Street Stock division with 26 competitors in the race for the crown. John Makula holds out in second after his first win last time out followed by James Hendrickson, Richie Smith and Stephen Anderson topping off the top five. After two weeks off, these guys are ready to ride.
Mini Stocks come back after a one week layoff chasing a new point leader in the way of rookie Jim Curry. Curry took his first feature win ever two weeks ago and is ready to rock with a 44 point lead over defending champion Chris Hooker who has three wins under his belt and a DNF last time out that dropped him out of the lead for a second championship crown. George Neumann is finally getting his race car on track and has moved up to third in the race. Steve Griffin holds out in fourth but apparently has sold his race car and won’t be there to defend his position. Mike Lawhorn and Richard Stroup will battle it out for that fourth and fifth position over the next couple of weeks.
Tommy Smith managed to put a little distance on Bobby Taylor after his win last week in the Hobby Stock battle for supremacy. Taylor fell behind by 17 points after moving from his 23rd starting spot to his fourth place finish last week. Curtis Neumann moved from 6th to 3rd with his second place finish last week while Dean Lawyer fell back a spot to fourth being chased by Alvin Williamson in the race for the top five.
Lee Keller still has a 65 point lead in Thunder Stock action after his fourth place finish last week. Jerry Hoover continues to run well with his third place finish, moving him ahead of Rick Badessa in the race for second. Louie Coie moved up to fourth while John Sullivan slipped to fifth finishing well back in the 23 car starting field. The run for the championship continues to get heated up.
Clark Pittsley has a lock on the 4 Cylinder Bomber division with his 5th win on their last outing. Consistency has been the key to his 500 point plus lead in the division. John DeGeorge, Jeff Pittsley, Harold Barup and Justin Durbin round out the top five and were all no shows two weeks ago.
Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles South of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds in Inverness. Grandstand gates open at 4 and the first heat will get the green flag at 6 p.m. Come to where the action is every Saturday night, Citrus County Speedway.
