Sportsman Start Big Weekend at Speedworld - Wednesday Practice Expanded | by Dave Westerman
There's only one night of racing this weekend at Orlando Speedworld, but it will be a big one with all six FASCAR divisions in action Friday night.
Heading up the program will be the Halifax Photo 50 for the Sportsman cars. This will be the first of two 50 lap events this weekend for the FASCAR Sportsman drivers as they'll also race the Homer Gordon Memorial Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway. That race was postponed last week by rain.
Also racing Friday night will be the Super Late Models, Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Super Stocks and Strictly Stocks.
Speedworld will not be racing Saturday night so that several of the Bandolero drivers can attend the INEX Bandolero Nationals in Mobile, AL. Regular Saturday night racing resumes next Saturday, June 19th with grandstand admission always only $5.00 for adults.
In other Speedworld news, track management has expanded the Wednesday practices sessions beginning next week and going through the Summer months. Practice will now be held every Wednesday from 2-10PM. Single car practice will take place from 2-6PM with practice by class from 6-10PM.
Kart racing is being added to the Saturday night race program starting on July 10th in the form of the Florida Asphalt Series Tour (FAST) who have been renting the track one Sunday a month for some time now, but will now switch to Saturday evenings.
"This is a win/win situation for everybody," says Speedworld General Manager Dick Westfall. "Having the karts on Saturday will bring the track some extra revenue while the FAST group will no longer have to rent the track and pay for their own insurance. Speedworld makes a little extra money while FAST saves some money which is good for all parties plus the karts put on a great show and we're proud to add them to our Saturday line-up," says Westfall.
The FAST Karts will race once or twice a month through the balance of the 2004 racing season.
Plans are also being finalized for the INEX RE/MAX Legends Car Regional Qualifier at Speedworld on July 17. The Legends will also race that Friday evening, July 16 with a rain date for the Regional Qualifier of Sunday, July 18. Over 70 Legends Cars are expected to try and earn a spot in the 2004 Legends Nationals which will be held later this year in Las Vegas, NV.
Friday night, pit gates will open at the usual time of 4PM. Grandstands open at 6PM and racing starts promptly at 8PM.
