Full Weekend of Racing for June 12th at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (June 9, 2004) With last weekend's rainout, the Homer Gordon Memorial Sportsman 50 lapper has been scheduled for this Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway. Homer Gordon was a member of the FASCAR family for many years and died suddenely last year. We honor Homer and miss him everyday. Also returning from last weekend's rainout will be the Classic Cars. This will be their first appearance this year at New Smyrna Speedway and drivers and fans are looking forward to seeing them run again. With five races down on their schedule, Ben Booth leads the points for the Classics and has won three out of five races. Two weeks ago Cory Freed, better known in the No. 12 Super Stock at Orlando SpeedWorld, took his first feature win in a Classic Car. Cory is sure to do well at New Smyrna along with State Senator Bill Posey of Rockledge. Also on the program will be the Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Super Stock, Mini Stock and Strictly Stocks Mark Smith leads the way for the Late Models with 240 points followed by Josh Schmidt who stands only twenty points behind Schmidt. Coming in third is Troy Atkins with 208 points followed by Don Hess in fourth and only eight points behind Atkins with 200 points. Randy Dye rounds out the top five with 116 points.
Bobby Blakes leads the points in the Open Wheel Modifieds with 272 points. But coming up fast is last year's Orlando SpeedWorld Open Wheel Modified Champion Matt Wheeler who has 188 points. Chad Pierce stands third with 140 points followed by Ed Kuhel with 128 points and rounding out the top five is Brad May with 116 points. Ron Whaley has established himself a pretty good lead in the Super Stock division with 384 points. Jeff Colburn comes home second with 296 points followed by Josh Wronkowski with 269. Barry Parks comes home fourth with 232 points followed by Charlie Collins with 220 points. Jack Lenzen, Stephen Dembinsky, James Adams, Chuck Smith and Mike Soukup round out the top ten.
Qualifying for the Homer Gordon Memorial Sportsman 50 will begin at 6:45 p.m. with racing action at 7:30. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR415 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna in beautiful Samsula, Florida. Have an opinion on this story?
