New Smyrna to honor lost friend Homer Gordon this Saturday | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (June 3, 2004) On June 5, New Smyrna Speedway will honor their friend and fellow racer for many years Homer Gordon with the Homer Gordon Memorial Sportsman 50. Homer was well known and loved at both Orlando SpeedWorld and New Smyrna Speedway and left us last year in October. Homer suffered a massive heart attack while racing his brand new Sportsman on the last lap of his heat race. Fans and racers were stunned, our hearts were filled with sadness. Saturday night the Sportsman will honor Homer and remember their fellow driver and good friend.
"Losing Homer was like losing part of us," said fellow racer Duane Freed. "Homer was always there to help everyone if they needed it. If you needed a part and Homer had it, it was your's." Homer never failed his racing family and was always at both Orlando SpeedWorld and New Smyrna Speedway every weekend whether he had a car to race or not. He loved his friends and was always there for them. Qualifying for the Homer Gordon Memorial Sportsman 50 will be at 6:45 pm. Also the Classic Auto Racing Series will join in Saturday's night fun at New Smyrna. With five races down on their schedule, Ben Booth leads the points for the Classics and has won three out of five races. Last week Cory Freed, better known in the No. 12 Super Stock at Orlando SpeedWorld, took his first feature win in a Classic Car. Cory is sure to do well at New Smyrna along with State Senator Bill Posey of Rockledge. On the program with the Homer Gordon Memorial 50 and the Classic Auto Racing Series will be the FASCAR Super Late Models, Super Stock, Mini Stock and Strictly Stock. The Late Models will be off due to the Goodyear Challenge Late Model race at USA International in Lakeland on Saturday. Open Wheel Modifieds are off due to the Penske Racing Shocks United Pro Modified race at Ocala Speedway Saturday night. Grandstands will open at 6 p.m. with qualifying for the Sportsman 50 at 6:45 p.m. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR415 between I-95 and I-4 eight miles west of New Smyrna in beautiful Samsula, Florida.
