(May 26, 2004) New Smyrna Speedway will celebrate Memorial Day Weekend with "double" points for all divisions. McLeod comes in third with 116 points followed by Brent Hobbs with 92 and Guy Thomas with 84. Rick Bates, Wayne McCall, Dick Ruckh, Bruce Lawrence, and Chet Morrison complete the top ten. Young Troy Atkins leads Mark Smith by 32 points in the Late Model division. But Josh Schmidt sits only 4 points behind Smith with 172 points. Don Hess comes in fourth with 120 points followed by Randy Dye in fifth with 116 points. Charlie Merz, David Pletka, Dewayne Barrus, Michael Williams, and Chuck Abell complete the top ten. Bobby Blake, the 2003 Open Wheel Modified Champion, leads the Modified points with 200 points, 60 points more than second place Chad Pierce. Matt Wheeler, who started out a little later this year due to his new marriage, comes in third with 124 points and is moving up fast. Ed Kuhel and Mark Vandevender round out the top five. Donny Williams was the 2002 Sportsmanship Champion and is headed in that direction again as he leads the Sportsman division with 336 points, 152 points over second place Chris Peludat. Dale Clouser, Ken Lewton, and Paul Hudson are all tied in third with 156 points each. Bruce McGonigal, Cory Kaiser, Joe Gerard, John Nusbaum, and Mike Soukup round out the top ten. Buddies Ron Whaley, Jeff Colburn and Charlie Collins are the top three in the Super Stock division. Whaley, who leads the points with 304, has managed to get 64 more points than Colburn. Collins, who was last year's Champion, is 84 points behind Whaley in third. Double points could help any of these guys on their way to the Championship. Josh Wronkowski sits fourth followed by Barry Parks in fifth. Jack Lenzen, Stephen Dembinsky, James Adams, Mike Soukup, and Chuck Smith round out the top ten. Brian Bellaw and Tim "Mr Mini Stock" Vulpius both know what it is to be champions. Bellaw was the 2002 and 2003 Late Model Champion and Vulpius was the 2003 Mini Stock Champion. And now, they are tied in points for the 2004 Mini Stock Championship. Coming up fast to challenge Vulpius and Bellaw is Chad Carpenter who came back this year with a brand new Mini Stock. Carpenter is only 24 points behind Bellaw and Vulpius with 256 points.
Alli Owens, a new driver this year to FASCAR, had been racing at Volusia Speedway Park but decided to give the asphalt a try. Alli stands fourth with 144 points. Fifth is Ron Dubean with 136 points. Completing the top ten are Mark Broat, Ronald Karto Jr., Wayne Wells, Ben Cutler Jr., and Pug Puglisi. Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing action at 7:30.
