Mod Squad Attacks Citrus Again | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 5/13/04) Another Modified 30 is on the race card for Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway. Harold Cannon comes back into the fray, leading the point’s race and losing out on win number 3 for the year to Mike Wilson who moved up to third in the run for the Modified crown. John Grimm will be back to protect his runner up position just 26 points up on Wilson with three top five finishes in the first three races of the Citrus series. Billy Bechtelheimer holds out in fourth 21 points up on Mickey Kempgens.
Super Stocks return this weekend and are picking up in numbers with Jo Jo Viverito still holding on to the top spot ahead of two time winner Ernie Reed. Reed was looking for win number three last week but got caught up in a first lap crash that took him out for most of the race. John Makula is just one point up on James Hendrickson in the race for the point’s crown. Richie Smith rounds out the top five.
Chris Hooker is closing in on Steve Griffin’s point lead after picking up his third win last week in Mini Stock action. Rookie Jim Curry is busy holding off 3 time champion George Neumann in the race for third while brother David Curry has his hands full trying to catch Jim and George. The battle continues this weekend.
Three drivers share the six wins thus far in Hobby Stock action. With over thirty cars showing up just about every week the field is being split into two feature races giving more drivers the opportunity to get to Victory Lane without beating their way to the front in 20 laps. Two time winner Tommy Smith continues to hold a comfortable lead on Bobby Taylor on the point’s ladder. Neil Herne and 2 time winner Dean Lawyer are locked in a tie for third while Alvin Williamson is just one point behind in fifth. The only other two time winner in the top ten is Curtis Neumann who has won two of the three races he was able to finish but also has three DNF’s in six weeks of racing and holds 9th in the top ten. This battle is really heating up with 46 contenders in the hunt.
Three time Thunder Stock winner Lee Keller holds a fifteen point advantage over two time winner Rick Badessa in their race for the crown. Jerry Hoover rounds out the top three with one trip to the Winner’s Circle. John Sullivan and Louie Cioe round out the top five and are still looking for their first win. Forty six racers are in this race for point supremacy.
Clark Pittsley and John DeGeorge hold the top two spots in the 4 Cylinder Stock division. Jeff Pittsley holds out in third but has moved up to Mini Stocks so his spot is up for grabs in the coming weeks. Justin Durden raced twice and won twice but was a no show last week to defend his fourth spot. Harold Barup made his first trip to Victory Lane last week and holds out in fifth position.
Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 in Inverness at the Citrus County Fairgrounds. Grandstand gates open at 4 and the green flag drops on the first heat at 6 P.M.
