Goodyear Challenge Late Model Drivers go for 100 laps Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (May 5, 2004) Race number three for the Team FASCAR Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series will run this Saturday night, May 8, at New Smyrna Speedway. Having tried their luck first at Orlando SpeedWorld and then Bronson Motor Speedway, the racers will now take on the high banks of the one-half mile asphalt oval this Saturday night. Jason Boyd of Orlando has won both previous races and has high hopes of winning his third race to make it three in a row. But Joe Winchell has been very competitive and right on Boyd's tail so it may not be so easy for Boyd to just walk away with the win. Only eighteen points separate Boyd and Winchell and one bad night for either one could make a world of difference. Rich Clouser runs third in points and only 60 points behind Boyd. Nine points behind Clouser is Doug Samion who has proven that he can not only drive a Sportsman and win a Championship but also a Late Model. Three points behind fourth place Samion is Tate Pierce. And three points behind Pierce is sixth place Chuck Burkhalter. All very close in points going into race three. Coming in seventh is Jerry Artuso, eighth Dawayne Dryan, ninth Greg Kaouk and tenth Martin Pierce. "I love this track and we always do well at New Smyrna," said Rich Clouser of Palm Bay. "I consider this my hometrack and so does my car owner Bobby Sears. Bobby knows this track well and as won both Mini Stock and Late Model Championships at New Smyrna." "We have a new car for this weekend and we tested it last weeked at New Smyrna coming in second," added Closuer. "We just really want a good finish and a few more points under our belt." "A number of the finest Late Model drivers in the state are expected for this weekend's 100 lap race and maybe even a few unexpected ones also," said Marketing Director Dick Gordon. "We expect a really good crowd for these guys." Qualifying for the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100 lapper will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Other FASCAR divisions on the card with the Goodyear 100 are Super Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Super Stock and Strictly Stock. The Sportsman and Mini Stock division have the night off. New Smyrna Speedway is located at SR44 and SR415 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna in beautiful Samsula, Florida. Have an opinion on this story?
