Florida Pro Advanced Auto Parts Late Model 100 in Citrus Spotlight Saturday | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 5/5/04) The Florida Pro Late Model Series makes their first of two trips to Citrus County Speedway this Saturday night. Working on their 11th year of action throughout Florida and Georgia this Super Late Model Series always draws a great field of competitors. Many of the locals have made their mark in the series and may have home track advantage when they make the scene for the Advanced Auto Parts Super Late Model race this weekend.
Speculation is that Wayne Anderson will be a popular pick after his showing at Lakeland USA last week. Don’t count out Citrus County Speedway track record holder Scott Grossenbacher or former Florida Pro Rookie of the Year and defending Citrus track champion Mike Bresnahan. Another local favorite is former champ Herb Neumann Jr. Florida Pro Point leader Rich Pratt and runner up Jay Middleton are both sporting Florida Pro Wins this season at Punta Gorda and Lake City. Rookie Jim Smith from Inverness is currently running third in points in the early going and knows his way around his home track.
Late Model enthusiasts can bank on a great show, a good field of Super Late Models, being piloted by the best drivers in Florida coming to this 3/8ths mile track that allows for passing everywhere. Most of the top drivers in the series race here in our regular Late Model races frequently and it could be anyone’s race.
Florida Pro time trials will kick off the night of racing to qualify the entries for starting positions in the 100 lap main event. The fast qualifier will be running in the low 13’s or possibly be the first Late Model to break into the 12 second bracket. He will pull a pill to determine starting spots for the top qualifiers.
Added to the full night of racing will be the continuation of points races for Super Streets, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers. Joe Viverito and Ernie Reed continue their tight battle for the Super Street championship with 17 more racers after their spot. Mini Stocks should be back in numbers as Steve Griffin heads up the 23 car division in their point race. Tommy Smith continues to hold off the 41 car Hobby Stock division and will be back to defend that position Saturday. Lee Keller is top shoe in the Thunder Stock race with 3 out of five wins under his belt. John DeGeorge popped to the top of the 4 Cylinder Bomber ladder by 7 points with a top five finish last week.
Citrus County Speedway will open the pit gates at noon with practice starting at 2 p.m. Grandstand gates open at 4 and Florida Pro Late Model time trials begin at 5:30. Heat races will take the green flag at 6 for the other five divisions. The speedway is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds.
