Modified 30, Sportsman 40 & Figure 8's Highlight Citrus RaceCard Saturday | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 4/28/04) Lock and load for another exciting Saturday night at the races when Citrus County Speedway kicks in week five of the 2004 point season. Seven divisions lock horns with the Modifieds back for another 30 lap encounter that has Harold Cannon looking for his third win in a row. John Grimm, Chris Fadling, Mike Wilson, Billy Bechtelheimer, Mickie Kempgens, Glenn Erwin, Ricky Hall, Ralph Terry and Bobby Bellott round out the top ten in pursuit of the top spot for their third race of the season.
Richie Smith has the point lead after taking the win in the first race for the Sportsman division. Richie now has three rides he is keeping up with and should be back attempting to make it two in a row. Thirteen cars made the first show of the year for qualifying and a 40 lap feature. It was a late pass on Mark Dominique that put Smith on top in the early going. Stephan Anderson, David White and Dwight Pinner are sitting in the top five positions all within 32 points of the leader.
Former Figure 8 champion Ron Schreifels kicked off his return to racing after several years off with the first feature win of the year. Another regular Ken Crews tows up from Tampa and would love to put a win on the board for his racecar. Former Champ Gary Swing is also back in action after several years on the sideline holding out in third ahead of new comers Steve Thomas and Neil Herne.
Twenty two Mini Stocks are in the race for the crown after three weeks of racing and Steve Griffin holds a three point lead over defending champion Chris Hooker. Richard Stroup, rookie Jim Curry, former three time Champion George Neumann and David Curry are in a four way race for third in the early going. They will be racing in a 20 lap feature Saturday night.
Tommy Smith has been the dominant force in the Hobby Stock division, driving the race car that his brother Richie drove to three championships in the division. Tommy was the wrench man so he knows the car and the set up that works at Citrus sporting 2 wins for the season. Bobby Taylor has earned his second spot in the running with three top five finishes but is still looking for his first feature win of the season. Dean Lawyer, Alvin Williamson, Ernie Reed and Curtis Neumann maintain positions in the top five over the 38 registrants in the division with an average of 27 cars making the scene weekly.
The Thunder Stock division has grown to 43 cars in the point’s race and Lee Keller logged three feature wins in a row from the rear of the field to hold the top spot. Rick Badessa has one feature win and 3 top fives to hold out for second. Glen Colyer took a big hit to end the race last week but continues to hold a solid third in the running. Rounding out the top five are Jerry Hoover and Steve Stinedurf.
The 4 Cylinder Bomber division grew from four to ten starters last week and put on a pretty good race. Justin Durbin made his first race a winning effort and moved right into fourth in the point’s race. Clark Pittsley has a one point lead on John DeGeorge for the top spot. Jeff Pittsley holds on to third with Durbin and Rick Fort rounding out the top five.
Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Fairgrounds in Inverness. Grandstand gates open at 4 and racing action gets underway at 6 p.m.
