Super Late Models Gear up for Citrus 75 | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 4/21/04) Citrus County Speedway gears up for week 4 of their 49th racing season featuring the Super Late Models in a 75 lap run to Victory Lane for $2,000 this week. Scott Grossenbacher and Rex Struble come back with feature wins in the Twin 50 format two weeks ago. The 75 lap feature was announced last week with the big win purse to open up more races for the local Late Model hot shoes wanting more races than the 5 twin 50’s that are scheduled this season. The top two in the 2004 point race are Wayne Anderson 3 points up on Mike Bresnahan and they may be back to continue their showdown of two weeks ago. Grossenbacher and Struble hold out in third and fourth while John Chance is back in a Late Model ride after taking several years off and enjoys fifth in the early running. Former champion Herb Neumann Jr. holds out in sixth just 2 points up on Dale Sanders. Rounding out the top ten are Ricky Carlton, Perry Lovelady and Ryan Foster. Eighteen cars ran in the Twin 50’s which opened their point season.
Added to the race card will be the Open Wheel Modified Lite cars, (formerly Dwarf Cars) racing in their first race of the year at Citrus and they always put on a great show. Super Streets, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers will spice up the Saturday Night Live action.
Jo Jo Viverito popped to the top of the Super Street Stock point’s heap with a slim 2 point lead over James Hendrickson. Ernie Reed took his first win of the season and moved into a tie with John Makula for. Stephen Anderson has been running hard in the early going and holds out in fifth just two points out of third with two top five finishes after two weeks of racing for the division.
Steve Griffin sits on top of the Mini Stock division after three weeks sporting 2 top fives, a top ten and a heat win. Defending champ Chris Hooker trails by 12 points with one feature win tucked away paired with a top five and a top ten finish in the early going. Richard Stroup has been the surprise of the season thus far just 3 points behind Hooker. George Neumann is 26 points out of third and just one point up on rookie Jim Curry and two points up on David Curry. This is going to be a tight battle all season.
Tommy Smith holds on to the lead by 39 points in the Hobby Stock division, coming into week four, with Curtis Neumann chasing him after his second win of the season last week. Bobby Taylor is 23 points up on Todd Downs and Alvin Williamson in the race for third with Neil Herne, Dean Lawyer, Troy Davis and Ernie Reed very much in the hunt.
Lee Keller popped to the top of the Thunder Stocks with his second win in two weeks. Steve Steindurf slipped to second by three points in the tight run for the top. Rick Badessa has a one point edge on Jerry Hoover and a three point lead on Glen Colyer in the race for third.
The 4 Cylinder Bombers continue to have a tough time getting off the ground. Hopefully the division will start building to more than 3 or 4 cars and be able to put away more than one lap. Clark Pittsley jumped to the top of the point’s standings with his second win in a row. He is followed by his brother Jeff and John DeGeorge who had a mishap in lap one last week that caused them both to call it a night due to three flat tires between them.
Citrus County Speedway is located two miles south of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 in Inverness at the Citrus Count Fairgrounds. Grandstand gates open at 4 and Late Model time trials start at 5:30 and races at 6:00.
