Mod Squad and Mini Cups Return to Citrus County | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 4/14/04) The Modifieds light them up again at Citrus County Speedway Saturday night for another 30 lap main event. They are on this years schedule twice a month and the field continues to grow and get quicker on the 3/8th mile bull ring. Harold Cannon will be looking for his second win in a row with competition from Chris Fadling, John Grimm, Ricky Hall and Mickey Kempgens who rounded out the top five in their last outing. Many of the Late Model drivers are turning to modifieds in an effort to get into a less expensive division to run and open up more opportunities to race.
Mini cups will make their first appearance of 2004 in heat and feature action. It’s amazing how these monster drivers can even get into these, extremely small, NEXTEL Cup replicas much less slam the peddle to the metal and put on one fine show. The field is expected to bring approximately 20 competitors from all over Florida as this traveling series is expected to make several appearances to Citrus this season.
Added to the race card will be the Super Streets Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers in heat and feature action. Steve Olone rocketed to the winner’s circle in the Super Street win last year and comes into this week defending the top spot in the early point race. James Hendrickson will have to find some more horsepower to catch Olone and continue to stay ahead of Steve Anderson who has several wins at Citrus. Jo Jo Viverito moved up to fourth in the race for the crown followed by Chris Cross.
Steve Griffin comes into week three of the Mini Stock point race with a slim 2 point lead over defending champion Chris Hooker. Richard Stroup, Jim Curry and David Curry round out the top five over the 15 entries in the early portion of the racing season.
Tommy Smith capitalized on his win last week and a second place finish in week one of the new season to take over the top spot by 14 points in the Hobby Stock point chase. Dean Lawyer moved to second on the merit of winning the first of the twin features last week. The 28 car field was split to make up a pair of 20 lap features due to the car count. Thirty two cars have entered the point’s race in two weeks of racing. Todd Downs, Ernie Reed, and first week winner Curtis Neumann round out the top five in this exciting division.
Thunder Stocks also split a 28 car field for twin 20’s with Lee Keller and Rick Badessa sharing the winner’s circle last week. Steve Stinedurf maintained his point lead after two weeks of competition after his win in week one. Keller holds out in second followed by Glen Colyer Sr., Rick Badessa and Jerry Hoover.
Hopefully the 4 cylinder Bomber division will grow in the coming weeks with only five contenders thus far this season. First week winner Jeff Pittsley has a one point lead over last week’s winner Clark Pittsley in their point race. John DeGeorge is seven points behind the leader followed by Jamie White who did not race last week. Tony DeGeorge was unable to start their feature on his first outing last week and has yet to earn any points. This division is wide open with along season ahead of them.
Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds. Grandstand gates open at 4 and races take the green flag at 6 every Saturday night.
