What's Happening at Orlando SpeedWorld this Weekend!!! | by Dave Westerman
Can anybody stop Patrick Conrad? That's the question at Orlando Speedworld as the young Legends car driver has scored six win in a row and will be going for number seven Saturday night prompting track GM Dick Westfall to consider putting a bounty on the Clermont driver. Before Conrad goes for another win on Saturday, he'll strap himself in his Ricky Wood owned Super Late Model for Friday FASCAR action looking for his first win in the tracks premier division.
"I'm getting more comfortable in the Super Late and we're making really good progress," says Conrad. "I'm really thankful that I've got this ride and hopefully I can get in victory lane soon" he says. Super Late Models will headline the Friday night FASCAR action with both B.J. McLeod and defending track champ Rusty Ebersole back in action this week to challenge Ricky Wood, the winner the last time the SLM ran two weeks ago, Ronnie Roach, Bobby Fleckinger, Jared Allison and a host of others.
Also on the Friday card are the Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks, and Strictly Stocks. The Mini-Stocks have the week off. Pit Gates open at 4PM, Grandstand gates at 6PM and racing starts promptly at 8PM.
Saturday night, Conrad and his fast #2 Sedan will be challenged by another large field of Legends. Twenty-four Legends took the green last week, the biggest weekly Legends field ever at the track and interest continues to grow with drivers from as far away as Tallahassee competing last week.
Deland's Ben Booth will lead a strong field of cars this week as the Dan Webster for U.S. Senate Classic Auto Racing Series will make their second appearance of the year. Booth, the defending CARS Champion, won the season-opener for the Series here last month, but will have plenty of competition from the likes of Jim Rahman, Wayne Ashton, Ed Yates, Daryl Grief, Bill Posey and many more.
Also in action will be the Bandeleros and the new Hurricane class which is fast becoming a fan favorite. Orlando's Greg Bruce has won four of five Hurricane features and has put the challenge out to anyone who thinks they can beat his fast Ford Escort.
Pit gates open Saturday at 3PM, grandstands at 5:30PM, and racing starts promptly at 7PM. Adult admission to the grandstands on Saturday is just $5.
SPEEDWORLD NOTES:
The Bandelero Outlaws finally got to run by themselves last week for the first time. Three cars signed in and ran the heat, then Kevin Henry jumped in Derrick Wood's Young Guns winning car and went out and won the Outlaw race. Henry was the Young Guns champion last year but can no longer run with that group since he turned 16 years of age. At 68, third place finisher Dave Jarrett was older than the rest of the field put together!!
Car owner Donnie Lewis was getting plenty of pats on the back after his Chad Pierce-driven Modified picked up the feature win last Friday. It was the first Modified win of Pierce's career and the first time one of Lewis' cars had been in victory lane since 1986.
Speedworld held it's first Legends/Bandelero "school" on Saturday morning and had a very good turnout of prospective racers looking to join the INEX program. A former unlimited hydro-plane racer bought two Bandeleros and a Legends car while several others expressed interest in going racing in the two spec series divisions.
Two of the top Super Stock drivers will be "missing in action" this week after being handed two week suspensions for an on-track altercation last week that resulted in another driver becoming an innocent victim, ending up with a badly damaged race car. Both Ron Whaley and defending Super Stock champion Corey Freed will get a couple of weeks off to let their year-long feud "simmer" down a bit although the suspension will not prevent Freed from racing his Classic Car on Saturday night since that is not a FASCAR-sanctioned series.
