Citrus Features Late Model Twin 50's | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 4/7/04) With a pair of fifty lap Late Model features on the race card for Saturday night, Citrus County Speedway fans will be getting a double dip of their favorite local and state drivers. Each 50 lap feature will pay $1,500 to win and $1,000 for second and paying pretty well on back in the field. Survivors of the first race will go in a second 50 lap feature with the opportunity of doing some resetting of their chassis and changing tires between races.
Tire changers may want to get the word on what that will do to their starting position before they exercise the option. That and other rules for these special races will be discussed at the drivers meeting. The Late Models will be running a limited schedule this season under a special point system that will vary from the weekly regular division point system.
Saturday night will also see the Super Stocks (Street Stocks) running in their first point race of the season. They will be dropped from the regular schedule when the Sportsman division is running their monthly 40 lap specials. Last week the Sportsman put on an excellent show and if the car count can come up a little, they may get more racing opportunities at Citrus. There is a big question mark as to how many will make the changes to qualify for the Super Stock division which replaced the Street Stocks of 2003. Some dropped back to the Hobby Stock division.
Hobby Stocks came on strong last week with a 29 car field registering and 27 cars taking the green flag. This has become the most competitive division of the early season and we haven’t seen all of them yet. Curtis Neumann took the season opener in a wire to wire win but he will have his work cut out for him this week with the new lineup rule coming into effect this weekend. The number of competitors could double before the season gets to the halfway point in July. Hobby Stocks have a full schedule for the 2004 season with some promising rookies showing some horsepower and a desire to make their mark for 2004.
Balancing out the night of racing excitement will be the Mini Stocks chasing defending champion Chris Hooker who took the opener. Thunder Stocks will be after Steven Stinedurf who won the point lead last week and the 4 Cylinder Bombers winner Jeff Pittsley will try to hold on to the top spot in their second week of their point season. Last week’s winners come into this Saturday night leading the point’s standings with fifteen to twenty drivers ready to do everything available to knock them off the top rung of the ladder.
Fans are in for 200 laps of feature action on the 3/8ths mile, three groove, racetrack that is just kicking off their 49th racing season. Pit gates open at 2 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 4 with the green falling on the first heat at 6 p.m. Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Fairgrounds.
