Classic Cars Head for Jax Raceways Saturday Night | by Dave Westerman
The Classic Auto Racing Series runs its final dirt track event of the 2003 season Saturday night at JAX Raceways as part of a big three division show.
Along with the 25-lapper for the Classics, fans will be treated to a pair of big races for two of JAX Raceway's regular classes. The Late Models will go 75 laps for $3,000 to win while the Hobby Stocks will duke it out for a $1,000 top prize in their 50 lap event.
Deland's Ben Booth comes into this week's CARS race with a rather commanding 47 point lead in the Classic Auto Racing Series point standings over fellow Deland resident Daryl Grief. Grief is 69 points ahead of third place Joey Strehle, who also hails from Deland.
Patrick Sanders' win at Volusia Speedway Park last month has boosted him to within 20 points of Strehle while fifth place Bud Spencer is now just one point ahead of sixth place Bill Posey. Al Hagan, Jim Rahman, George Hall, Jr. and George Hall III round out the top ten in points.
As is the case during the November JAX event, the Florida drivers will be challenged by several drivers from the Maryland/Pennsylvania and Tennessee Classic Car circuits including Brian Ball of Cosby, TN who runs the only 1940 Ford bodied car in the Classic series.
