Super Late Models in 2nd Leg of Triple Crown at Citrus Saturday

by Larry MacMillan

(Inverness, Fl. 11/05/03) Racers and race fans are making preparations for the second leg of the Triple Crown at Citrus County Speedway Saturday night. After 20 cars went at it at Bronson last Saturday night the field is expected to grow for Saturday night’s race and many will be at the Speedway for the Friday night practice to test their set ups on the 3/8th mile, three lane race track that is closing out its 48th season of operation this weekend.

The three race series will culminate next weekend at New Smyrna Speedway for the cherished Governor’s Cup. The Governor’s Cup was started by the late Frank Deary at Golden Gate Speedway in the 1960’s and has a long list of winner’s from all over the country claiming their share of this prestigious race.

Archer Florida’s Patrick Williams led the field to Victory Lane at Bronson, capturing the first leg of the series after last week’s race and comes into this week with a slim point lead over Florida’s ”Mr. Excitement” Jimmy Cope out of St. Petersburg.

Chris Fontaine out of Lakeland comes in third in the point’s race followed by Tampa’s Aric Almirola, Live Oaks Fain Skinner, Land O’ Lakes Scotty Crockett, Herb Hoefler from Floral City, Gainesville’s Mac Johnson, Barry Willoughby from Port St. Lucie, Fl and Ricky Carlton from Homossassa round out the top ten.

One race can make a difference and fast qualifier Wayne Anderson couldn’t make the start of the race last week when his rear end went away on him just before race time. He and several local heavy hitters are expected to join the field to make for some extra excitement and possibly change the picture of the overall outcome this Saturday night.

Added to the program will be a 50 lap Mini Stock special that will bring in some of the heavy hitters from throughout the state who battled local Mini Stock Challenge champion Robbie Yoakam in the season long traveling series. Rick Sirmons, Richard Kelly Jr., Robbie Storer, our own 2003 Champion Chris Hooker, runner up Chris Thornton, three time champion George Neumann and the other young regulars that made the local Mini Stock season as exciting a finish as it was. This should be a killer race too.

Super Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks will round out the all feature program with qualinfying time trials for the Super Late Models and the Mini Stocks. Pit Gates will open at noon, with practice starting at 2 P.M. and time trials at 6. There will be a Friday night practice only from 5 until 10 P.M.

Citrus County Speedway is located two miles South of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds in Inverness.
