TBARA Winged Sprints Final Race of 2003 and Homer Gordon 50 Lap Sportsman Race Headline Saturday Night action at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (November 5, 2003) Saturday night's program at New Smyrna Speedway will be full of racing action as the TBARA Winged Sprints end their season on the high banks of New Smyrna. Along with the TBARA Winged Sprints will be the Homer Gordon 50 Lap Sportsman race, Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Super Stock, Mini Stock and Strictly Stock. The Super Lates have the night off as the second leg of the Sunbelt Triple Crown series runs at Citrus County Speedway.
Saturday night will be the final points night for the Open Wheel Modifieds and the Mini Stocks plus the TBARA Winged Sprints.
Keith Butler leads the points for the TBARA Winged Sprints with 991 points but Dude Teate has not given Butler much room as he comes in second, only one point behind Butler, with 990. Doug Hevron sits in third with 975 points but only 15 points behind Teate. Add Shane Butler in fourth at 922 points and the championship could go to any of the four.
Gary Grimmler comes home fifth with 892 points followed by Wayne Reutimann Sr. with 851. Mark Gimmler comes home seventh with 720 points followed by Wayne Reutimann Jr. with 741 in eighth. John Sambor stands ninth with 651 and rounding out the top ten is Scott Adema with 632.
Owner points are just as close as the driver points with Keith Butler (19) leading the owner points with 986 followed by Heckman Motorsports (22) with 975. Shane Butler (18) comes in third at 940 points. Fourth is Gary Gimmler (29) with 892 points. George Rudolph Jr. (68) stands fifth at 885. Reutimann Motorsports (99) comes home sixth with 851 points followed by Todd Schmidt (96) in seventh with 792. Mark Gimmler (51) sits eighth with 770 points followed by Reutimann Motorsports (00) in ninth with 741 points. John Sambor rounds out the top ten with 651 points.
Mark Gimmler leads the Rookie points with 770 with John Sambor standing second with 651 points. Richard Burnett is third with 472 points followed by Randy Woodall at 222. Tim Sharrone comes home fifth with 198 points. Rounding out the top ten are John Gilbert Jr. at 129, Richard Waddell at 120, Doug Berryman at 117, Danny Martin Jr. at 110 and Warren Baughn at 95.
With points in all three divisions very close, Saturday night's action will prove "who is the best" in TBARA Winged Sprints. Come watch as they fly around New Smyrna Speedway under the direction of the "one and only" WILDCHILD.
Super Late Models will return to New Smyrna on November 15th and see their final race of the 2003 points season. This will also be a "double" points night for them.
Even with a win and double points, B.J. McLeod could not pass David Rogers who is the 2003 Super Late Model Champion at New Smyrna Speedway.Rogers has 696 points, 120 more than second place B.J. McLeod at 576.
Wayne Parker comes home third with 376 points followed by Guy Thomas who is only 24 points behind Parker at 352 points which could make for an interesting race. Joe Fitos completes the top five with 236 points.
Rounding out the top ten are David Froelich with 176, Brent Hobbs with 160, Mark Vandevender with 140, George Murphy with 104 and Mike Finn with 92.
Late Models will race for "double" points this Saturday but it will be Brian Bellaw, in his Jolly Roger's/Blackies Saloon Chevy with his second consecutive Late Model Championship. Bellaw leads the points with 552, 96 points over Tim Clark who runs second with 456 points. Bobby Orr stands fourth with 244 points followed by Don Hess in fifth with 212 points.
Completing the top ten in the Late Model division is Timmy Todd and Larry Osteen who are tied at sixth and seventh with 172 points each. Chris Lawrence comes home eighth with 132 points followed by Scott Seither with 120 points in ninth. Completing the top ten is David Rogers who sits at 108 points.
Bobby Blake looks to be the next 2003 Open Wheel Modified Champion as he leads the points with 620 over Mark Vandevender at 484 points. Matt Wheeler comes in third with 304 points followed by Rob Underwood in fourth with 224 points. Brad May completes the top five with 196 points.
Jim "Hoot" Flynn stands sixth with 180 points, 20 points more than seventh place David Castello at 160 points. David Hite and Jerry Symons are tied in eighth and ninth with 120 points each followed by the 2002 Open Wheel Modified Champion Justin Henderson with 116 points.
A number of Sportsman are expected Saturday night for the Homer Gordon Sportsman 50 lapper along with 911 Racing joining in. Homer Gordon drove the No. 22 Sportsman and died two weeks ago on the last lap of his heat race. This race is dedicated to Homer from his racing family.
Billy Spade looks like he is well on his way to the Sportsman Championship this year. Spade leads the points with 724 points followed by Dale Clouser who comes home second with 592. Ron Lufcy, who has been absent lately, comes home third with 556 points followed by John Nusbaum in fourth with 448 points. Jim Snyder completes the top five with 376 points.
Bill Love comes home sixth but stands only 8 points behind Snyder at 368. Mike Trocki holds seventh with 312 points followed by Chris Peludat in eighth with 268 points. Dusty Downer holds ninth in points with 240 followed by Cory Kaiser in tenth with 180 points.
Only 8 points separate Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulpius and Tim "Missileman" McPhail in the Mini Stock division. Saturday night's action will decide that championship.
Vulpius leads with 808 points followed by McPhail with 800. Rex Christensen comes in third with 704 and looks like he is a sure thing on that position as fourth place David Castello is 392 points behind Christensen and has been a "no show" as of late. Completing the top five is Ben Hutto with 260 points.
Ron Dubeau comes home sixth and only 4 points behind Hutto at 256 points. Rex "Boneman" Hollinger comes home seventh with 216 points. Wayne Clark and Pug Pugsli are tied in eighth and ninth with 148 points each followed by Bob Delmastro with 132 points in tenth.
Another close points battle is the Super Stocks. Charlie Collins leads the points with 772 but Ron Whaley is not giving him much breathing room as he comes home second with 744 points. Jeff Colburn comes in third with 588 points followed by Josh Wronkowski in fourth with 496 points. Mike Amato, the driver who was hurt last weekend at New Smyrna, stands fifth with 412 points.
Completing the top ten are Butch Pierce with 280 points, Todd Driscoll with 196, Ted Head with 180, Bob Trombley with 160 and Robert Skinner with 152 points.
