Driver Suspended For Remainder of 2003 | By Jack Smith
Open Wheel Modified racer Phil Morrison of Punta Gorda was suspended By Charlotte County Speedway Promoter LeRoy Davidson as a result of an incident Saturday October 4. The suspension is effective immediately and is for the rest of the 2003 racing season.
In the final feature this past Saturday the Open Wheel Modifieds took to the track with 13 cars. On the final turn of the final lap, the #63 of Morrison and the #19 of Bart Corlieto (Cape Coral) got together in a scary wreck which resulted in a major fire involving Corlieto's car.
There have been several incidents in 2003 involving the two drivers, and fans have been very vocal about the safety questions. Last year Morrison put fear into many parents and children by running his car on the track with hundreds of the children involved in an on track game during intermission.
Morrison was suspended yesterday specifically for "rough driving".
When Promoter LeRoy Davidson was asked if there may be more actions taken with other drivers or crew members over the recent incident, he said "Not may, there WILL be actions taken with others over what happened Saturday night."
Morrison will miss the rest of the Modified points race and the Open Wheel Modified Triple Classic on October 25th at the Speedway, as well as the Brian Davidson Memorial 150 Late Model race. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
