TBARA Winged Sprints and Super Stock 50 Lapper Top Saturday's Night PennySaver Night at New Smyrna | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla. (September 17, 2003) Although the Late Models and Open Wheel Modifieds are off Saturday night, New Smyrna Speedway will see plenty of side-by-side action as the TBARA Winged Sprints try on the high banks with some hot racing action.
It is also Volusia PennySaver Night Saturday and you will find "two for one" coupons in this week's PennySaver. Be sure to pick one up and bring a friend to see some of the best Saturday Night racing in Central Florida.
The TBARA Winged Sprints are one of the hottest traveling series in Florida and always draw a big crowd no matter where they go. Fans sit in amazement as they "fly" around the one-half mile New Smyrna Speedway. Drivers like Keith and Shane Butler, Stan Butler, Dave Steele, Dude Teate, Wayne Reutimann and Wayne Reutimann, Jr. and Wendy Mathis are just a few of the Sprint car drivers expected.
If you really like Sprint action, arrive early and watch the Sprints as they hot lap around New Smyrna Speedway.
Also on the program is a 50 lap Super Stock feature. Charlie Collins holds a 24 point lead over Ron Whaley in this ever-growing class. These guys go door-to-door every week, bumping, grinding and a big fan pleaser. Jeff Colburn stands third in points with 412 points followed by Josh Wronkowski and Mike Amato. Butch Pierce, Todd Driscoll, Bob Trombley, Ted Head and Nick Vogler round out the top ten. Qualifying for the 50 lapper is 6:30 p.m. depending on car count could be earlier.
David Rogers leads the Super Late Model points with 584 points followed by B.J. McLeod with 455. Although absent last week, Wayne Parker still sits third in points with 352 followed by Guy Thomas with 284 and David Frohlich with 176. Joe Fitos, Brent Hobbs, Mark Vandevender, Mike Finn, and Chris Fontaine round out the top ten.
The Late Model division is off but when they return, it is Brian Bellaw with the Jolly Roger's/Blackie Saloons Chevy leading the points with 472. Last week's winner Tim Clark sits second with 384 followed by Mark Smith with 288. Bobby Orr and Don Hess round out the top five.
The Open Wheel Modifieds are also off but when they return it is Bobby Blake leading the way for the Modified points with 520. Mark Vandevender stands second with 412 points followed by Matt Wheeler, Brad May and Jim "Hoot" Flynn. David Castello stands sixth with Rob Underwood, David Hite and Jerry Symons tied for seventh, eighth, and ninth. Justin Henderson stands tenth.
Billy Spade leads the way for the Sportsman division with 536 points followed by Ron Lufcy with 406 points. Dale Clouser moved into third last week with his win at 388 points. Bill Love and Jim Snyder are tied at 292 points each for fourth and fifth.
With points this close and with the competition of this class, it will be a fight down to the wire for points. This is one that could go anyway for sure.
A very emotional win took place in the Mini Stock division last Saturday night as Tim "Missileman" McPhail won the race for his friend Ray, the gas man, Crews who passed away on Sunday. Not only did McPhail take the win but he also took the points lead with the win leading Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulpius by 24 points. McPhail stands at 656 points to Vulpius's 632 points.
Rex Christensen is finally seeing his hard work pay off as he stands third in the Mini Stock points with 544 points. David Castello has moved up quickly and now stands fourth with 284 points followed by Ben Hutto with 240 points.
Wayne Clark, Bob Delmastro, Rex "Boneman" Hollinger, Ron Dubeau and Troy Kruse fill out the top ten.
Qualifying for the Super Stock 50 Lap feature will be 6:30 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR415 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna Beach in beautiful Samsula, Florida.
