Pro Mod Squad Takes on Citrus Again | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 8/20/03) First, my apologies for the misinformation about the results of the Florida Pro 100. Mike Fritts was D.Q.’d in tech for weighing in 75 pounds light. That gave the win to Mike Faulk who led most of the race despite the pass made by Fritts on lap 83. I was not made aware of the infraction until Tuesday’s Citrus County Chronicle story. This of course moved everybody up one spot and gave Faulk his first feature win in the Florida Pro series.
Saturday night will see the return of another quick series as the Pro Modifieds return to Citrus. John Gerstner should be back to attempt his second win here at the quick 3/8ths mile oval. Dwayne Dempsey is always a threat in the modifieds and Gary Southard, Jeremy Gerstner and Chris Fadling should be back to defend their top five finishes from their last outing. Local new contender Robert Ray is a threat no matter what seat he is in and he has more seat time in his modified than on his initial outing back on May 31st.
It would appear that rookie Mike Bell is for real in his #17 Sportsman after scoring his 3rd win of the season and putting some more cushion on his point lead. Kyle Bookmiller backed up his first win of the season with a second place finish in what turned out to be a knock down drag out run for the flag for the second week in a row. Bill Oesterreicher, Bill Ryan, Johnny Sanders and Mike Veltman round out the top five as they return for heat and feature action Saturday night.
Danny Cretty lost some ground on his hold of the Street Stock lead for the crown with his fourth place finish last week. Ernie Reed picked up 10 points on the leader with a second place finish. Mickey Burns picked up 5 points on the leader with his third place finish. Joe Viverito lost some ground with his DNF but still held onto fourth. Daniel Webster led early in the race but lost some ground in his rise to the top. James Green proved to be the spoiler with his third win of the season last week. They will be back in heat and feature action this week.
Chris Thornton closed to within 12 points of Mini Stock leader Chris Hooker after last week’s action. Phillip Joyner logged his third win of the season and still has a long way to go to snatch the crown away from Hooker and Thornton. Mike Lawhorn is the only driver in the top five still looking for Victory Lane and he and George Neumann continue their battle for fourth.
Richie Smith still has young Curtis Neumann in his rear view mirror in the race for the Hobby Stock crown. It’s slow going but Neumann picked up five points on Smith who is looking for his third consecutive division crown. Sport Wilson suffered from heat prostration last Saturday night and had his brother Wes drive for him. Dean Lawyer added his third win of the season and is closing on the top three. Roy Perkins is well back of the top four but has a solid hold on fifth. Twenty six of the 63 drivers that have participated in the division took the green flag last week.
Slower traffic cost Lee Keller his third win of the season last week but he continues to put the pressure on Pat Quick in the race for the Thunder Stock crown and closed the gap by 20 points with a second place finish. Louie Cioe had a DNF and lost ground to Larry Triana in the race for third as Triana picked up 52 points on Louie when all was said and done. Derek DeSomma holds out in fourth by just 3 points and is feeling some heat from Tim Wilson who picked up his fourth win of the season last week.
Pit gates open at 3 and grandstand gates open at four with the first heat taking the green flag at 6 p.m. All division should run heats and features unless there is another weather problem. Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds.
