Team FASCAR presents the Goodyear Challenge Late Models at New Smyrna Speedway on August 16 | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (August 13, 2003) Lately only Mother Nature has been the winner at New Smyrna Speedway but come this Saturday night, the Goodyear Challenge Late Models will not only take on the high banks of New Smyrna Speedway but possibly Mother Nature.
This has been one of the worst rainy seasons in a long time and it seems that racers do more working on their cars than racing their cars. Hopefully this Saturday night will be different.
It was last Saturday night that the Goodyear Challenge Late Models went to Charlotte County Speedway in Port Charlotte for twin 50 lap races but Mother Nature decided to dump gallons of water and the races were called. This Saturday night Jerry Artuso comes to New Smyrna Speedway leading the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series with 441 points. Artuso and Brad May have been battling for the point lead all season. May stands second in points with 408 points.
Rich Clouser of Palm Bay, Florida sits third in points in his Bobby Sears No. 9 Late Model. Clouser has shown that he can drive a Late Model as well as he could his Sportsman and Super Stock. Clouser stands at 377 points. Joe Sumasky stands fourth with 346 points and looking to better his position.
Larry Osteen and Steve Smith are only one point apart running fifth and sixth. A good finish this Saturday night is very important when points are so close. Coming in seventh is Jimmy Castleberry with 320 points but only one point behind Castleberry is Jason Boyd who is looking for more points and more wins. Tim Russell and Dan Crowe round out the top ten with 303 points and 274 points.
Qualifying for the Goodyear Challenge Late Models will be at 6:30 p.m. with racing action starting at 7:30 p.m.
Also on the program Saturday night will be the Sportsman, Open Wheel Modifieds, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and Strictly Stocks. The Super Late Models will have the night off.
New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR417 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna Speedway in beautiful Samsula, Florida. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
