TBARA Spriint Cars Cruise Again at Citrus | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 7/30/03) Another TBARA Winged Sprint car invasion is scheduled for the fast 3/8ths mile at Citrus County Speedway this Saturday. Fans that have seen them fly around this 48 year old venue will certainly be back and for those who haven’t seen them conquer the 13 second mark on the clock should seriously consider making this race. This is their third appearance of the season and they have had three different winners with 20 plus winged rockets at each event. Joey Aguilar took his first sprint car win at Citrus in June and certainly will be back to try to make it two in a row. Dude Teate makes the trip from Leesburg for every sprint race held here and pretty much claims Citrus as his home race track. The youngest of the Reutimann clan, Wayne Jr. will try to better his third place finish in his last outing. The list goes on with some of the hottest sprint car drivers in the country making their mark on the asphalt right here in Florida and turning it on at Citrus this weekend.
Meanwhile, the regular divisions continue in their quest for the division crowns. Stephen Anderson will make every effort to pick up his third Sportsman win of the season but will have to start at the rear of the pack Saturday night after his win last week. Kyle Bookmiller and Bill Oesterreicher will join Anderson as they pursue point leader Mike Veltman who holds a 94 point lead over Oesterreicher. Mike Bell is trailing Billy “O” by 4 and Bill Ryan is one point out of third in this top run for the second third and fourth.
Danny Cretty gained some ground over runner up Ernie Reed in the run for the Street Stock Crown. Ernie suffered a DNF which allowed Mickey Burns and Travis Nichols to close in on him with top five runs last week. Joe Viverito rounds out the top five. James Green managed to hold off Nichols in the run for the flag last week for his second win of the season and sits in fifteenth spot in the point standings.
Chris Thornton managed a third place finish last week and moved back into the Mini Stock point lead by three over Chris Hooker who finished in fourth. Phillip Joyner Jr. picked up 25 points on Thornton by logging his second win of the season. Mike Lawhorn moved around Dustin Des Champ who was unable to race due to an injury that he is recovering from. George Neumann is coming on strong and could move into the top five with a good finish this week.
Dean Lawyer finally found his way to the winner’s circle in the 21st race of the year for the Hobby Stocks. Richie Smith chased him to the line to hold onto the point lead over Curtis Neumann, Sport Wilson who missed his opportunity to win his 8th of the year and had to settle for a fifth place finish from the back of the 26 car pack. Lawyer locked in a solid fourth place in the point race with his win and holds a 39 point lead over Roy Perkins.
Pat Quick became the only 8 race winner at the speedway this season. She put some more cushion in her Thunder Stock point lead over Lee Keller who had to settle for a second place finish again for his 12 top five finish. Louie Cioe, Larry Triana and John Donahue round out the top five in the 42 car field who are chasing the leader for the crown.
Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of Inverness on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds. Pit gates open at 2, grandstand gates open at 3 and the green flag falls on the first heat race at 6 P.M. baring any weather complications.
