FASCAR Pro Mods go for 50 Laps Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway

by Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla (July 30, 2003) Twice the Pro Mods were rained out at USA International. Then they went to Citrus County Speedway and got rained out and last Friday night they were rained out at Orlando SpeedWorld. Well, this Saturday night is the Joe Middleton Memorial Pro Mod race and hopefully the Racing Gods will be with us.

Joe Middleton very seldom missed a race. Everyone knew Joe and his familiar blue and while No. 71 Open Wheel Modified. Seldom did Joe ever miss a race and he was well liked and loved by his fellow racers and friends. When Joe passed away, it was only fitting that a Memorial Open Wheel Modified race be run in his honor. This Saturday night, Joe's race will be run.

Jerry Symons and D.J. Hoelzle come into Saturday night's race tied in the points lead. But only three points behind Symons and Hoelzle is Alan McCafferty. These three drivers are all very good at New Smyrna and any of the three could be in Winner's Circle.

Bryan Campbell sits fourth with Skip Honaker in fifth. Red Vann, Jim "Hoot" Flynn, Matt Wheeler, Alan Bruns, Raymond Vann and Jason Boyd round out the top ten. If you like Open Wheel Modified action, this 50 lap event will definitely fill your needs.

On the program with the 50 lap Pro Mod race will be the Super Late Models, Late Models, Sportsman, Mini Stocks and Strictly Stocks. The Super Stocks will have the night off.

David Rogers leads the Super Late Model points by 104 points over second place Wayne Parker who only has a four point lead over third place B.J. McLeod. Watch each week as they battle for the points lead at New Smyrna.

Guy Thomas sits fourth in points with 220 points followed by David Frohlich in fifth with 144 point. Joe Fitos, Brent Hobbs, Mark Vandevender, Chris Fontaine and Mike Finn complete the top ten.

Brian Bellaw holds the lead for the Late Models with 344 points. Tim Clark sits second with 260 points followed by Mark Smith with 216 points in third. Timmy Todd and Larry Osteen are tied for fourth and fifth with 172 points each.

Don Hess moved into sixth in points last Saturday with this third place finish. Hess stands at 156 points followed by Bobby Orr in seventh with 140 points. Chris Lawrence, David Rogers, and Aaron Dreher fill out the top ten.

The regular weekly division of the Open Wheel Modifieds will be off but coming into action next Saturday, Bobby Blake holds a 20 point lead over second place Mark Vandevender. Matt Wheeler comes in third followed by David Castello in fourth and Brad May in fifth. Justin Henderson, Jim "Hoot" Flynn, John Zidek, Skip Honaker and David Hite round out the top ten.

Billy Spade leads the Sportsman division with 392 points. Ron Lufcy comes in second with 336 points. Chris Peludat stands third but has recently sold his Sportsman to Billy Cuddy. Peludat has 244 points. Dale Clouser has moved into fifth place with 204 points.

Jimy Snyder, Dusty Downer, Paul Colgan, John Nusbaum stand sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth. Cory Kaiser and Steve Redditt are tied in tenth with 128 points each.

Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulpius and Tim "Missileman" McPhail have one of the tightest points battles going on in the Mini Stock division. Vulpius leads with 496 points with McPhail at 472 points. Rex Christensen comes in third with 390 points with David Castello and Ben Hutto rounding out the top five.

Wayne Clark, Bob Delmastro, Troy Kruse, Chris Jones and Ron Dubeau fill out the top ten.

Even though the Super Stocks will have the night off, when they return to action next Saturday it is Ron Whaley with the points lead. Following Whaley is Charlie Collins, Jeff Colburn, Josh Wronkowski and Mike Amato. Completing the top ten are Butch Pierce, Bob Trombley, Todd Driscoll, Rob Watford and Ted Head.

Qualifying for the Pro Mod 50 Lap race will be at 6:30 p.m. depending on car count. Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR417 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna Beach in beautiful Samsula, Florida.
