Sunbelt Super Late Models go for 125 Laps at SpeedWorld on Friday | by Jane Smith
Bithlo, Fla (July 29, 2003) It has been quite a few weeks since Orlando SpeedWorld has gotten in a racing program. Mother Nature somehow knows when it is Friday and exactly where SpeedWorld is located. But hopefully this Friday night she will be kinder since the "Big Boys" are in town.
The last appearance for the Sunbelt Super Late Models at SpeedWorld in 2003 is this Friday, August 1. On their last visit to SpeedWorld, is was Jacob Warren winning his first Sunbelt Super Late Model race. Wayne Anderson was second, Brian Finney was third, Jay Middleton was fourth and Jonny Kay finished fifth. But it was David Rogers who lead most all of the laps and lost his motor right before the checkered flag giving Warren the win.
This Friday night, Wayne Anderson comes in as the points leader for the Sunbelt Series. Anderson sits at 780 points, 220 points more than second place Jay Middleton.
James Powell, Jonny Kay and Barry Willoughby round out the top five. Fain Skinner, Jacob Warren, Michael Williams, Eric Black and Mac Johnson complete the top ten. Also expect to see B.J. McLeod, David Rogers, Rich Pratt, Bruce Lawrence Sr. and Jr., Jimmy Cope, Justin Drawdy, and possibly Dick Anderson.
Qualifying for the Sunbelt Super Late Models will be at 6:30 p.m. depending on car count. Racing will begin at 8 p.m.
With the last two rainouts, the Sportsman, Super Stocks, Mini Stock and Strictly Stocks will see double features. The Super Lates will have the night off due to the Sunbelt race along with the Open Wheel Modifieds.
Shane Held leads the Open Wheel Modified division with 336 points with Matt Wheeler in second with 312 points. Jason Boyd comes in third with 284 points followed by Lynn Dicandio with 216 points and Glen Bradley in fifth with 200 points. Last Friday night, the Pro Mods were ready for 50 laps of action at SpeedWorld but once again, Mother Nature won. The Pro Mod race has been rescheduled for September 29. Open Wheel Modifieds will return to racing action on August 8th at SpeedWorld.
Richard Hight holds a 127 point lead over Michael Albert in the Sportsman division but with double features, Albert could tighten up the points. Doug Samion comes in third with 256 points followed by Danny Shearer with 216 points and Rob Kayse with 180 points. These guys do alot of close racing action and with double features on the line, it might even be closer.
Tim "Missleman" McPhail has the points lead for the Mini Stock division and leads with 424 points to second place Dick Laszlo with 304. Sean "Weasel" Bass comes in third behind Laszlo and only 8 points behind Laszlo. Mike Williams comes in fourth with 156 points over Randy Blakeslee with 128 points. This class has had a number of new cars in the field but with the rainouts, no one has gotten to see them race yet.
Cory Freed wants a second Championship and leads over Bob Wines by 72 points in the Super Stock division. Ron Whaley sits third with 284 points but the rumor mill says that he may be absent Friday night which will give Mike Soukup and Billy Cuddy the chance to move up. Soukup runs fourth in points with 220 with Cuddy in fifth with 196 points.
Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with qualifying for the Sunbelt Super Late Model Series at 6:30 p.m. depending on car count. Racing action starts at 8 p.m. Orlando SpeedWorld is located between SR50 and SR520 in Bithlo, Florida Have an opinion on this story?
