Pro Modifieds Head up Full Race Card at Citrus Saturday | by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 6/25/03) Baring any unforeseen typhoon or flooding rains that washed out last week’s program, Citrus County Speedway will spotlight the Pro Modifieds for their third appearance at the quick 3/8ths mile race course. Twenty nine of these open wheeled racers came to qualify on their first outing and 25 took the green flag for their 30 lap feature with Rob Partelo taking the win. Mike Wilson, Dwayne Dempsey, Bryan Campbell and John Gerstner took the top five spots. Gerstner came back to win the second time around with Dempsey on his rear bumper at the finish. Gary Southard, Jeremy Gerstner and Chris Fadling kept the front runners honest with good runs at the checkered flag over a 21 car field. Showdown number 3 promises to be a super challenge run for these hot shoes that seem to like the layout at Citrus.
This will be the last chance for the five regular divisions to earn some points in the wild races that are going on. Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks are scheduled to run in heat and feature action Saturday night and will have to make the best of the last week in competition before the speedway goes dark on Saturday July 5th in deference to the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. So if the weather gets us again this week they will have three weeks out of the seat.
All six divisions will be back in action on Saturday, July 12 with the regular Late Model point race getting back on the track. Spicing up this race card will be “Team X-Treem,” a three man Motorcycle Stunt group doing a special show that should excite the kids as well as mom and dad. Adam Chumeta, Chris Nichols and Todd Colbert are involved in Street Wars 2003 competition and vying for top billing as a coordinated motorcycle team that will thrill audiences all over the county.
July 19th will have the Figure 8’s back in action along with a full six division point race on the schedule. Fast Trucks are back in action on July 21st. TBARA Sprints take off on August 22nd and BIG FOOT will be crushing cars along with a regular show on August 23rd. If the weather will just get straightened out, the balance of the season should provide more action than ever at this 48 year old venue. Racing continues through November 8th.
Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of S.R. 44 East on U.S. 41 in Inverness at the Citrus County Fairgrounds. Grandstand gates open at 3 and qualifying time trials for the Pro Modifieds are scheduled to go at 5:30. The green flag will drop on the first Hobby Stock heat at 6 P.M.
