Hot Point Races Spice Up Ocala Speedway action this Week

by Dave Westerman

As the first half point season draws to a close, battle lines are still drawn very close in all divisions at Ocala Speedway heading into this weeks action.

It's still a two man race in the Steven A. Bagen Super Late Models with Ocala's E.J. Wise holding a 21 point edge over Archer's Patrick Williams. Wise is in the drivers seat here if he can put up a couple of good finishes.

David Baxley has just a six point edge over Jeremy Gerstner in the WIND-FM Modified division and both drivers are coming off strong finishes in last week's UPM Tour event here. Don't count John Foerg out either as he's third in points, just seven behind Gerstner.
Tom Posavec continues to head the Diamond H Air and Heat Sportsman class by three markers over Patrick Mennenga while Frank Buchanan is third in points, 18 behind Posevec. Interestingly enough, the top three of Posavec, Mennenga and Buchanan finished in that order last week coming in fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively.

Marlon Durbin still holds a somewhat comfortable margin of 12 points over Larry Goolsby in the Mini Stock class while Goolsby is now just three points in front of third-running Rick Sirmans. This one could still go down to the wire.

The K-Country Street Stock championship run will more than likely come down to the final week as Mark Mitchell still heads the parade but by only three points over five-time winner Kyle Maynard. Tommy Roberts is ten points in back of Maynard and only five points ahead of fourth place Doug Webster.

Rick Kuhn's runner-up finish coupled with Tom Ellis' problems last week have the Toyota driver at the head of the pack by ten markers over Ellis. Joel Byall remains third in points over Ric Fort who will be going for his fifth win in a row Friday. Had Fort not had an early-season DQ, he would certainly be in contention for the championship.

Pit gates open at 4PM, Grandstands at 6PM, Steven A. Bagen Super Late Model Time Trials are at 7:30 and racing begins at 8PM.

Advance tickets are available at the track for the Wednesday, July 2, NASCAR Kodak Elite Late Model Series Race for five dollars off the admission price. Petty Enterprises drivers Kyle Petty and Christian Fittipaldi will be at the track to meet fans and sign autographs that night.

Tickets can also be bought on line by logging on to www.ocalaspeedway.com.
