Winged Sprints will Fly at New Smyrna on Saturday | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (June 18, 2003) The ever popular TBARA Winged Sprints will hit the 5/8 mile high banked New Smyrna Speedway this Saturday with plenty of high flying action for the fans.
Not only is the TBARA one of the most sought after traveling series in the state of Florida but also one of the fastest moving series. And they have the multi-talented "Wildchild" to flag them on their way and give the crowd a really good show.
Keith Butler leads the points for the TBARA Winged Sprints and will definitely be at New Smyrna along with his brother Shane Butler, Joey Aguilar, Dude Teate, Wayne Reutimann, Sr., Wayne Reutimann, Jr., Doug Heveron, Gary Gimmler, Bobby Rose, Wendy Mathis, Sonny Hartley, Scott Adema and many more.
Along with the TBARA Winged Sprints will be the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series on Saturday night. This is the only series that showcases Mini Stocks and always has a good number of cars on hand for a very good show.
Robbie Yoakam leads the points for the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series and has quite a few wins under his belt. Robbie Storer, Lee Davis, Richard Kelly, Jr., Darren Jackson, Jimmy Warrma, Dennis Valdez, Tom Jones, Jr., Chris Hooker and Tom Zimmerman complete the top ten in points.
A few New Smyrna Mini Stockers also plan to race the 50 lap event. Watch for David Castello, the 2002 Mini Stock Champion, and Rex Christensen to be in the event as well as Tim "Missileman" McPhail and his famous "Missile".
Qualifying for the 50 lap event will begin at 6 p.m. depending on number of cars to qualify.
Also in racing action will be the Open Wheel Modifieds. After last Saturday night's win, Bobby Blake moved ahead of Mark Vandevender in points for the lead by four. Blake stands at 364 to Vandevender's 360. Matt Wheeler comes in third with 172 points.
Fourth place in points is Brad May but May will be absent Saturday night as he is second in points in the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series and he will be running USA International Saturday night. This will open the field for some drivers to move up.
Jim "Hoot" Flynn fills out the top five in points but after Saturday night, I imagine points will definitely change.
Bill Spade leads the points for the Sportsman division with 384 points. Unless he has a few bad weeks, it will be hard to beat him since he has a good 112 point lead over second place Ron Lufcy. Chris Peludat stands third in points with 240 followed by Bill Love with 204 and Jim Snyder with 192.
This class is building weekly and has a very good field each Saturday night. Watch as they battle their way to the front each week.
Ron Whaley took over the Super Stock point lead after last week's win. Whaley now sits at 412 points while second place Charlie Collins has 388 points. Jeff Colburn comes in at third with 328 points followed by Josh Wronkowski at 264 points. Mike Amato rounds out the top five with 192 points.
Also in action Saturday night will be the popular Strictly Stocks with their tires squealing in the corners.
Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. New Smyrna Speedway is located between SR44 and SR417 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna Beach in beautfiul Samsula, Florida.
