Figure 8 and Late Models return to Citrus Saturday

by Larry MacMillan

(Inverness, Fl.) After two weeks of special races, the regular race card returns to Citrus County Speedway Saturday night plus the Figure 8’s take on the super fast intersection. The race for the championship crowns gets back on track for all six regular divisions and they are bringing out some hidden talent in the ranks.

Late Models continue their chase of Mike Bresnahan who has a slim fifteen point lead over Jim Smith as they take on their 8th point race of the year. Smith showed he is for real with his strong run in the Powell Memorial. Ricky Carlton shares twin wins with Smith in regular Late Model action, trailing in the race for second by eight and is definitely in the mix for the crown. Rounding out the top five are Daniel Keene with one win and Herb Neumann Jr. with two. Ironically, Bresnahan is still looking for Victory Lane. Thirty five Late Models have earned points in the race for the 2003 championship on their limited schedule.

Bill Oesterreicher comes off his fourth win of the season still chasing perennial Sportsman Champion Mike Veltman for the crown. After taking a week off to focus on just how he wanted to treat the rest of the season his wire to wire win probably gave him a good idea of what direction to take. He trails Veltman by 72 points and is 23 points up on Mike Bell. John Gann is just six points off the pace in the race for third. Johnny Sanders holds out in fifth buy has a hard charging Bill Ryan on his rear bumper for the spot.

Danny Cretty popped back to the top of the Street Stock point ladder with a heat win and a second place run in the feature. Ernie Reed was recuperating from some uncomfortable day surgery that more than likely affected his driving ability and slipped back into second by 27 points. Mickey Burns moved around Joe Viverito and holds down third by 27 points. Travis Nichols logged his fifth win of the season after rebuilding his racer overnight and moved to fifth in the race for his second crown in the division.

George Neumann is definitely making some noise to take his sixth Mini Stock crown despite getting a late start. He logged his third win of the season last week and is just out of the top five coming into this week’s action. Chris Thornton had to borrow a ride to hold on to his eight point lead over Chris Hooker. Dustin DesChamps had another sub driving for him last week and picked up enough points to move around Phillip Joiner by one point in the race for third. Mike Lawhorn has a solid hold on fifth but with 43 contenders that can change by the week.

Richie Smith found his way back into Victory Lane after a dry spell and continues to hold the point lead with young gun Curtis Neumann coming on strong in an attempt at dethroning his domination of the Hobby Stock division. Another threat is Sport Wilson who has been smoking the rest of the 22 and 25 car field from the back of the pack just about every week. HE missed his seventh win of the season by one spot last week, pressuring Richie at the line. Dean Lawyer has a comfortable 102 point lead over Roy Perkins who is looking at Alvin Williamson in his rear view mirror who is just nine points out of fifth.

Pat Quick still has a lock on the Thunder Stock race despite having to do some major repairs after a warm up mishap early in the evening. She managed to pull off a second place finish over the 26 car field right behind first time winner Jared Kessler. Lee Keller trials by 214 points but has a solid hold on second over Louie Cioe by 237 points. Larry Triana trails Coie by seven points in the race for third. John Donahue rounds out the top five with 36 cars in the running for the point championship.

Citrus County Speedway is located two miles south of Inverness on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds. Grandstand gates open at 3 and the green flag drops on the first heat at 6. The Figure 8’s round out a seven division race card with a 20 lap feature.
