TBARA Sprints Turn It on at Citrus County Speedway Saturday | by Larry MacMillan (Inverness, Fl. 6/10/03) If it’s speed you need, Citrus County Speedway is the place to be Saturday night when the winged TBARA Sprint Cars come in great numbers to one of their favorite short tracks in the state. The sprinters opened the season on February 8th and now will come in at the halfway point for their second of four appearances at this venue. The track has been modified a bit since their first appearance, giving them more room to pass on turn three and four and when these pros set up for this race track you can bet there will be some hard core racing to be seen this weekend featuring some of the best sprint car drivers in the country.
Wayne Reutimann Jr. and Dude Teate have just come off some big wins outside the state in USAC action and are expected to be among the hot shoes making the trip to Citrus. Others to look for are Wayne Reutimann Sr who won the last outing followed by Keith Butler. Shane Butler, Sonny Hartley and son Bo Hartley, David Steele, Doug Berryman, Kevin Feeney, Jeremy Dickerson, Scott Adama, Skeeter Faulconer, Jimmy Alvis, Gary Gimmler, Lee Cipray, Mark Gimmler, Paul Madden, David Slawiak, Hank Lower, Sport Allan, Wendy Mathis (the only young lady in competition) and the list goes on. TBARA sprinters have proven to be some of the fastest in the country, bringing home numerous titles from the Little Indy in Anderson, Indiana.
Sportsman continue to chase Mike Veltman who is working on his fifth consecutive championship in the division. Johnny Gann had Mark Domonique sub for him last week with a second place finish and closed in the points race with Mike Bell also gaining some points on the leader. Bill Oesterreicher did not race and fell from second to fourth with Johnny Sanders holding out in fifth. Ernie Reed put some cushion in his Street Stock lead with a feature win and leading the most laps last week. Danny Cretty lost 30 more points to the leader while Joe Viverito had a substitute driving for him and holding on to third. Mickey Burns gained on Cretty and Viverito but still holds out in fourth. Daniel Webster is being chased by Travis Nichols who is racing elsewhere for the next couple of weeks.
Mini Stocks have been short in car count but long in action with Chris Thornton still holding out in the point lead. Chris Hooker was able to close the gap after last week’s action to just 37 points. Phillip Joyner is tied with Hooker in the race for second while Dustin DesChamps has a good lead on fifth place Mike Lawhorn.
It was a complete tear down on Sport Wilson after his sixth win of the season last week. He is closing rapidly on point leader Richie Smith and runner up Curtis Neumann who trails Smith by just seven points. Dean Lawyer slipped for fourth twenty points behind Wilson and 115 points up on Alvin Williamson. Pat Quick continues to dominate the Thunder Stock division scoring her seventh win of the season. Lee Keller gave it all he had and it just wasn’t enough as both drivers came from the back of the eighteen car field to finish one-two. Louie Cioe, John Donahue and Larry Triana round out the top five
All five divisions and the TBARA Sprint cars will be running in heat and feature action Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway, 2 miles south of Inverness on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds. Grandstand gates open at 3 p.m. and the green flag flies on the first heat at 6:00. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
