Mother Nature Won last weekend will she do it this Weekend | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (June 11, 2003) - Last weekend Mother Nature spoiled racing action for New Smyrna Speedway drivers and fans. With Hurricane Season now open and going strong the challenge of "will we get the races in" will be much stronger than "who won the races."
All FASCAR divisions are scheduled to race heats and features this Saturday night at New Smyrna. David Rogers leads the Super Late Models with 348 points in the chase for the championship.
Wayne Parker and B.J. McLeod are running neck and neck for second and third spot with only a 4 points difference between the two. McLeod has one feature win this year at New Smyrna with Parker at none. Parker sits at 256 points with McLeod at 252.
Guy Thomas sits fourth in points with 168 followed by David Frohlich at 144 points in fifth. Frohlich also has one win at New Smyrna Speedway in 2003. his first feature win in the Super Late Models.
Brian Bellaw's Jolly Rogers/Blackies Saloon Chevy is doing a good job of defending his 2002 Late Model Championship. Bellaw leads the points for the Late Models with 280 points.
Tim Clark has shown his new No. 8 Late Model can fly and now sits second in points with 212 points followed by Mark Smith in third with 188. Timmy Todd and Bobby Orr round out the top five with 172 points and 140 points respectively.
If you have a Late Model and don't have a place to run, try New Smyrna Speedway one Saturday night. You will find great competition, good guys, and friendly people.
Mark Vandevender and Bobby Blake are dueling Open Wheel Modifieds as they are tied for the points lead. Vandevender and Blake both have 324 points and each want the lead. Watch these two as they battle each week for the Championship.
Matt Wheeler sits in third with 140 points followed by Brad May with 116 points. Jim "Hoot" Flynn rounds out the top five with 104 points.
A good field of modifieds had shown up last Saturday before Mother Nature decided it was her turn to win, hopefully they will get to race this weekend.
Bill Spade is leading the Sportsman points with 344 points. Chris Pedulat moved into second a few weeks ago with 240 points but right behind Pedulat is Ron Lufcy at 236 points. Jim Snyder has moved into fourth with 188 points followed by Bill Love with 180 points.
This class has grown alot and expect to see some great, close racing action.
Another close points battle is on as Ted "Mr Mini Stock" and Tim "Missileman" McPhail are only 8 points apart for the Mini Stock points lead. Vulipus holds the lead at 380 points but coming up in second is MePhail with 272 points.
Rex Christensen has worked very hard this year and the work has shown as he sits third in points with 316 points. Ben Hutto, one of our youngest drivers, comes in fourth with 172 points and making his debut into the top five is David Castello, 2002 Mini Stock Champion.
Castello, who went to the Open Wheel Modified division for awhile, has returned to the Mini Stock division in the No. 1 Mini Stock and has shown that she can still get it down.
Charlie Collins holds the points lead for the Super Stocks at 388 points. Ron Whaley is still looking for the championship also as he sits 16 points behind Collins with 372 points. Jeff Colburn holds third with 292 points followed by Josh Wronkowski in fourth with 236 points and Mike Amato in fifth with 184 points.
2003 marks the year that Butch Pierce returned to racing and is showing that the old "black magic" is still there. Pierce has moved into sixth place with 132 points.
Strictly Stocks will also be in action Saturday night as they have heats and feature also.
Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. New Smyrna Speedway is located between the intersection of SR44 and SR417 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna Beach in beautiful Samsula, Florida.
