Sportsman Special at SpeedWorld this Friday

by Jane Smith

BITHLO, Fla. - After a very successful CRASH-A-RAMA last Friday night, Orlando SpeedWorld returns to the asphalt to the FASCAR regular divisions. On the program for this Friday night will be the 911 Racing Series, a 50 Lap Sportsman feature plus Super Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Mini Stocks, and Strictly Stocks. The Super Stocks have the weekend off.

Derrick Wood has built up a pretty good points lead in the Bandolero Bandits division. Wood has 428 points, 95 points over second place Gerald White, Jr. Chad Atkins sits only 24 points behind White in third with 314 points. Rounding out the top five are Matthew Jarrett with 256 points and Josh Williams with 216 points.

Kevin Henry holds the points lead for the Bandolero Young Guns with 420 points. Brandon Thompson is doing his best to catch Henry and sits in second with 368 points. Scott Jarrett has moved into third with 320 points and hot on Thompson. Troy Atkins and Sam Watts round out the top five even though they have not been racing at SpeedWorld for awhile.

B.J. McLeod and Rusty Ebersole are having a fun time racing for the lead in the Super Lates. B.J. holds a 4 point lead over his friend Rusty. Not long ago true friendship was shown by these two when Ebersole did not have a ride one Friday night and McLeod loaned him his back-up car. What a race, what good friends!!

Ricky Wood sits third in Super Late Model points but riding on his tail is fourth place is David Hart. Wood has 188 points with Hart at 156 points and looking for a win. Jared Allison rounds out the top five with 100 points.

The Sportsman 50 Lapper promises to draw in alot of these fast cars. It is rumored that Chris Pedulat from New Smyrna Speedway will be on the asphalt at SpeedWorld for the first time for the event.

Richard Hight holds the points lead for the Sportsman at SpeedWorld with 379 points and will definitely be one of the lead factors in the 50 lap race. Michael Albert has moved into second in points with 296, 42 points more than third place Doug Samion with 252.

Our first time winner a few weeks ago Danny Shearer moved into fourth with 180 points followed by Robert Hight with 132. These drivers race hard every week for 15 laps sometimes 20 but you can bet that 50 laps will bring out the best in these hard charging, action packed division.

Open Wheel Modifieds return to action Friday night with Shane Held with the points lead. Held, who was the 2001 Open Wheel Modified Champion, sits on top with 272 points, 20 points more than second place newcomer Matt Wheeler. Jason Boyd sits third with 224 points but you can be assured that Boyd will move up fast as he defends his 2002 Champion title.

Glen Bradley sits fourth with 164 points but only 8 points behind Bradley is the winner of the last modified race Jared Allison. Allison moved into fifth with his win at 156 points.

Tim "Missileman" McPhail has a 88 point lead over second place Dick Laszlo in the Mini Stock division. McPhail, the 2001 Mini Stock Champion, is having a very good year at SpeedWorld as is Dick Laszlo in the only Mini Truck at SpeedWorld. Watch these two as they put on a show each week for the championship.

Sean Bass sits in third with 196 points and if he could stop the smoking and get to stroking, could be right up there fighting for the championship. Mike Williams, Jr., one of our newcomers, has shown that he has a touch of that Williams driving spirit as he sits fourth in points with 112. Randy Blakeslee holds fifth at 96 points but only 4 points behind is sixth place Pedie Allison.

This class seems to be short of cars this year and all Mini Stocks are invited to Orlando SpeedWorld for a night of fun, good racing, and hopefully new friends.

Super Stocks will be off but when they return on Friday, June 20, Cory Freed leads the points with 348 points. Bob Wines sits in second with 316 followed by Mike Soukup with 216, Ron Whaley with 208, and Billy Cuddy with 196 points.

Strictly Stocks will also be in action Friday night with plenty of beating and banging and spinning putting on one heck of a show for the fans.

Grandstands open at 6 p.m., racing starts at 8 p.m. Orlando SpeedWorld is located between the intersection of SR50 and SR520 in Bithlo, Florida.
