Sorenson Grabs $50,000 Rookie Points Lead | Pendleton, Ind. (June 4, 2003) – With steady performances in the opening six ASA Racing Series events, 17-year-old Reed Sorenson of Peachtree City, Ga., has tugged the $50,000 Rookie points lead away from Florida’s Travis Kittleson. Wheeling the No. 29 ACDelco Chevrolet, Sorenson has built an 86-point lead on Kittleson after the May 24 Iowa 300 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
Tying his career best finish, Sorenson crossed the finish line in third spot at Hawkeye Downs, jumping to fourth in the point standings. For a second consecutive event, Sorenson qualified in second, leading the opening laps of the event. Hawkeye Downs marks his fifth top-10 finish in six starts.
Suffering his second batch of bad luck in the last three events, Kittleson’s No. 30 Bob Steele Chevrolet dropped off the pace in the early stages of the 300-lap event with mechanical difficulties. Kittleson finished in 27th position, dropping to second in the freshman standings.
Illinois competitor Boris Jurkovic debuted with new sponsor Reliable Recovery at Hawkeye Downs, but the result was a second consecutive poor finish at 21st position. In the early stages of the season, Jurkovic scored a career best seventh at Concord Motorsport Park in the BFGoodrich Tires 250 and followed up that with a top-15 finish at Lanier. A pair of finishes outside of the top 20 have slide him back in the rookie standings. He trails Sorenson by 193 points.
Davin Scites, in the No. 06 John Michael Montgomery Chevrolet is fourth in the rookie points after finishing 16th in the Iowa 300. Scites recorded the biggest victory of his career at Concord in April, passing series veteran Mike Garvey on the final lap of the event. Scites has two top-10 finishes in the opening six races.
After two consecutive top-10 performances including a fourth-place showing at Toledo, Brett Sontag has climbed to fifth in the Rookie standings. After losing a lap to the leaders at Hawkeye Downs, Sontag used superb strategy and finished in the eighth spot.
The seventh event of the 2003 ASA Racing Series is set for Saturday, June 14 at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Mo. The Missouri 250 Presented by Jani-King takes the green flag at 9 p.m. (Central) and will be telecast live on SPEED Channel. Have an opinion on this story?
