All FASCAR Divisions are set for Heats and Features May 31 | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (May 28, 2003) With hurricane season right around the corner, all race tracks hope to get in as much as their racing season as possible including New Smyrna Speedway. Last year saw a number of races rained out, hopefully this hurricane season won't be as bad.
The Super Late Models were off last weekend but return to action this Saturday. David Rogers leads the points for the Super Late Championship with 308 points with all but two wins under his belt. Wayne Parker and B.J. McLeod are now tied for second and third with 220 points each. Both have strong cars and the will to win, this should just add to the weekly excitement fans get from the Super Lates.
Guy Thomas and David Frohlich are tied for fourth and fifth place with 144 points each. Frohlich, who will be at Columbia Motorsports Park this weekend for the Florida Pro race, could fall from the top five if Guy Thomas is back after suffering damage to his car two weeks ago. Joe Fitos sits to gain some with Frohlich not being at New Smyrna on Saturday as Fitos sits in sixth at 120 points, 24 points behind Thomas and Frohlich.
Brian Bellaw with the Jolly Roger's/Blackies Saloon Chevy has built up a 52 point lead over second place Tim Clark. Last week just when it looked like Clark was going to win his second Late Model feature, he spun on the frontstretch hitting the inside pit wall and damaging his car. Bellaw went on to win and built up his points lead. Timmy Todd moved into third with his second place finish last week. Todd sits at 172 points, 10 points more than fourth place Mark Smith at 162 points. Bobby Orr fills out the top five with 140 points.
New Smyrna Speedway is looking for a few good Late Models to come and join our regular Late Models. We promise fun and excitement and some really good drivers to compete with. If you have a Late and you are looking for a place to run, come try New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday night.
Mark Vandevender and Bobby Blake find themselves in a tie for the points lead in the Open Wheel Modified division. Both Vandevender and Blake have 324 points each. Matt Wheeler sits in third with 140 points and moving into the top five with his win last weekend is Brad May. May comes in fourth with 116 points followed by another driver who just appeared in the top five, Jim "Hoot" Flynn. Flynn sits in fifth with 104 points.
This will obviously be a very tight points race with plenty of action on the track every Saturday night. Who will win?? You have to be there to find out.
Bill Spade still sits atop of the Sportsman division points lead with 328 points, 102 points more than second place Ron Lufcy with 226 points. Chris Pedulat sits in third with 208 points followed by Bill Love with 180 points. Paul Colgan completes the top five with 164 points but coming up fast is sixth place Jim Snyder, only 4 points behind Colgan with 160 points.
This class had so many cars last weekend that they were given an extra five laps for their feature race. This has become a very strong class and exciting.
Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus leads the points in the Mini Stock divisions after his win last weekend. Vulipus tops the points lead with 348 points but right on his tail is Tim "Missileman" McPhail at 344 points. A very close race for the championship is expected.
Rex Christensen is having a much better year and sit third in points with 292 points. Although Ben Hutto was missing in action last weekend, he still holds fourth in points with 156. Bob Delmastro sits in fifth with 132 poitns.
This class is also looking for a few good cars to come and have some fun. So bring your Mini and have some fun!!!!
Ron Whaley has lead the points in the Super Stock division for awhile but with his win last week, Charlie Collins took over the point lead with 360 points. Whaley now sits in second with 332 points with ties him with third place Josh Wronkowski also with 332 poitns. Jeff Colburn comes in fourth with 256 points followed by Mike Amato in fifth with 160 points. This will be a knock-down, drag-out race for the championship with anyone of the top five as the champion.
The Strictly Stocks will also be in action Saturday night with heats and features. But after the 25 lap race on Friday night, there may be a few new dents and dings in them.
New Smyrna Speedway is located between the intersection of SR44 and SR417 between I-4 and I-95 eight miles west of New Smyrna Beach. Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
