Pro Modifieds Back at Citrus Plus Full Program

by Larry MacMillan

(Inverness, Fl. 5/28/03) The Mod Squad will make their second trip to Citrus County Speedway as the Pro Modifieds take on the 3/8th mile oval. Twenty-five hot shoes turned on the rpm’s in their March 15th appearance and Rob Partelo was to shoe in that one. Mike Wilson, Dwayne Dempsey, Bryan Campbell and John Gerstner locked on to round out the top five. A good field is expected to return to the reconfigured racecourse that will give them a little more room for passing with three and four lanes open to the driver who wants to take the chance. Dwayne Dempsey turned a very respectable 13.752 second run to pick up fast qualifying honors. This was their season opener and they will have a whole lot of experience behind them for this run Saturday night.

Late Models will take the night off for the next three weeks with the Powell Memorial 150 scheduled for next week. This will be the second leg of this Super Late Model race and many of the locals will be running the first leg at Ocala on Friday night and make the trip to Citrus on Saturday night to run for the overall championship and the $5,000 win purse in the 150 lap annual race. The TBARA Sprint Cars will run on Saturday June 14th and the regular Late Model division will have that night off as well.

Sportsman will come in Saturday night still chasing Mike Veltman for the crown. Veltman and runner up Billy “O” Oesterreicher each share three feature wins and four heat wins yet Veltman comes into this week’s action with a 48-point lead. The difference being Veltman’s 6 top five finishes as opposed to Billy “O’s” 5. Johnny Gann, Mike Bell and Johnny Sanders round out the top five with 193 points separating the top five.

Ernie Reed popped back to the top of the Street Stock race with Ernie taking a third over Danny Cretty’s sixth place finish, wiping out Danny’s 11 point lead and putting him 8 points out of the top in this seesaw battle. Joe Viverito remains in third over Mickey Burns and last week’s first time winner Daniel Webster for no change in those spots.

Chris Thornton pulled off his second win of the season and put some cushion in his Mini Stock point lead over Chris Hooker. Phillip Joyner, Dustin Des Champs and Rob Wheatley continue to hold third through fifth. Joyner had a second place finished and pulled to eleven points out of second. After nursing a kidney stone ailment for the past two weeks, Rob Wheatley looked like he was going to pick up his first win of the season until lap fifteen when his racer went away on him late in the race and he fell to a fifth place finish but closed on DesChamp’s fourth place spot.

Curtis Neumann holds a slim 2 point lead in the Hobby Stock point race over two time champion Richie Smith who finished fourth just ahead of Neumann in last week’s action. This battle continues Saturday night with Dean Lawyer, Sport Wilson and Tim Whitehead continuing to run strong in defense of their positions in the race.

Pat Quick became the winningest driver in all divisions as she logged her fifth win in the Thunder Stock Division. She continues to distance herself from Lee Keller who got his 11th top five finish out of 12 races. He is still looking for his first win as are the balance of the top six drivers in the division. Louie Cioe, Larry Triana and John Donahue round out the top five, as Roy Blotz slipped to seventh in his second no show. Derek DeSomma holds out in sixth place

It should be an action filled night as the regular divisions continue in their battle for point supremacy in their thirteenth week of action. Rounding out the night will be qualifying time trials for the mod squad as the Pro Modifieds make their second appearance at Citrus County Speedway. Time trials will start at 5:15 and the first heat should get the green flag at 6 p.m.
