Six Divisions Turn on Week 12 at Citrus Saturday

by Larry MacMillan

(Inverness, Fl. 05/21/03) Late Models, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks turn it on again for week 12 of the 2003 Citrus County Speedway season. It should be a barn burner if we get a repeat of last weeks close finishes in most divisions.

The race for the Late Model win went uncontested with Ricky Carlton having his way with the real race going on behind him between Wayne Anderson and Mike Bresnahan. The pair of hot shoes raced nose to tail for the most of the race. Bresnahan tried every move in his book of tricks on Anderson, and pulled off the second place finish in the final run for the flag by inches at the stripe. This gave Bresnahan a 28-point cushion after going into the car war last week with a one point lead over Jim Smith. Carlton jumped from fourth to second on the merits of his second win of the season and Smith slipped to third on the basis of his 8th place finish. Daniel Keene Jr. slipped to fourth and Herb Neumann Jr., Rex Struble and Dale Sanders moved ahead of Billy Bechtelheimer who had his first DNF of the season.

Mike Veltman scored his third win in a breeze last week stretching his 41-point Sportsman lead to 62 over Bill Oesterreicher. Johnny Gann closed to within 10-points of second while Michael Bell remains in fourth slipping to 62-points out of third. Johnny Sanders holds on to fifth in the point race but was forced to have George Neumann substitute for him with motor problems. Neumann has taken over driving the Bill Kart racing #96.

Danny Cretty got back into Victory Lane for the second time this season and closed to within 10 points of Ernie Reed for the point lead. Ernie put the hammer down and tried to snatch the win away from Cretty but had to settle for second. Mickey burns and Joe Viverito battled for third in the race and in points with Burns winning the race but Viverito holding onto third in points by 28. Daniel Webster lost some ground in his run for fourth with a 9th place finish in the race and now trails Burns by 95.

Chris Thornton still has a lock on the Mini Stock lead in the run for the crown but lost some ground to Chris Hooker after last week’s sixth place finish. Phillip Joyner closed on both of the top two with his third place finish. George Neumann took the win in the race and moved up from 8th to 7th but that may be his last ride in the #3 Mini Stock since moving to Sportsman. Robbie Yoakam ran second and maintained Dustin DesChamps fourth position in the run for the crown. Rob Wheatley’s is still battling with a sick race engine and Mark Sowell had to hold onto his fifth position with a sub-driving job for a fifth place finish last week.

Curtis Neumann moved to the top of the Hobby Stock ladder for the first time in his two year racing career and the young gun did it with a second place finish behind Sport Wilson last week. Richie Smith slipped to second on the merits of his fifth place finish. Dean Lawyer holds out in third over Sport Wilson and Tim Whitehead who had Tim Sharrone driving for him last week.

Pat Quick picked up her third win and some more cushion in her Thunder Stock point lead. Lee Keller followed her across the line and trails by 91 after last week’s wild ride. Larry Triana moved ahead of Roy Blotz in the run for third with both of them finishing back in the pack. Louie Cioe trials Blotz by 19.

They all go for broke in week 12, which makes it 1/3 into the 2003 season this Saturday night. Citrus County Speedway is located 2 miles south of Inverness on U.S. 41 at the Citrus County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 3 and the first heat takes the green flag at 6.
