Antique Cars Make Visit to New Smyrna Speedway on May 24 | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (May 21, 2003) Antique Cars will be heading to New Smyrna Speedway this weekend as the special feature. Last weekend fans got a sneak peak at three of these cars. One old Sportsman and two old Indy-type cars. Those and a number of others will be displayed this Saturday and will race for the fans.
All FASCAR divisions will be in action except for the Super Late Models who have Saturday night off. That means there will be Late Model, Sportsman, Open Wheel Modifieds, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and Strictly Stocks in heats and features.
Although the Super Lates will be off, this has become a very tight points battle. David Rogers leads the points with 308, a good 88 points ahead of second place Wayne Parker and B.J. McLeod who are tied with 220 points each. Only two drivers, other than David Rogers, has won a Super Late Model feature - B.J. McLeod and David Frohlich, last week's winner.
Guy Thomas and David Frohlich are tied in fourth and fifth place with 144 points each. Joe Fitos sits in sixth with 120 points. All top five are very strong cars and this will be one exciting time for Super Late Model fans. Can anyone beat David Rogers and win the Championship?? You have to be there to find out!!!
Brian Bellaw with the Jolly Roger's/Blackies Saloon Chevy sits on top of the points for the Late Model division. Bellaw, who was one of four that suffered damage in the heat race last weekend, was able to repair his car enough to race the feature and come home in fifth place. Bellaw sits in the lead with 204 points.
Tim Clark took over the second place in points with his win two weeks ago and last week's third place finish. Clark sits at 176 points. Mark Smith also suffered damage last week in the heat race but made repairs and came out for the feature. Mark Smith sits in the third place position with 144 points. Only 4 points behind Smith is fourth place Bobby Orr who also was damaged in the heat race last weekend and unable to repair his car. Orr sits at 140 points. Another 4 points separate fourth and fifth place with Timmy Todd sitting in fifth with 136 points.
With points this close and only mid-season, anyone of these drivers has a shot at being the Champion.
Mark Vandevender sits on top of the Open Wheel Modified points with 304 points but only 8 points behind Vandevender is Bobby Blake. Matt Wheeler comes off third with 108 points followed by Chad Pierce with 88 points in fourth. 2002 Points Champion Justin Henderson stands in fifth with 84 points. Expect plenty of wheel-to-wheel action in this class, a fight until the end for the championship.
Bill Spade leads the points for the Sportsman division with 268 points followed by Ron Lufcy in second with 208 points. Chris Pedulat sits in third with 176 points but tied in fourth with 164 points each are Bill Love and Paul Colgan. Jim Snyder sits in sixth with 156 points.
Every week this class puts on one action packed show and with the determination of each driver, anyone can win the championship.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail and Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus are tied for the points lead in the Mini Stock division. Standing on 308 points each, this will be a weekend to weekend battle for the Championship. Rex Christensen sits in third with 260 points followed by Ben Hutto in fourth with 156 points. 2002 Mini Stock Champion David Castello returned in the #1 Mini Stock a few weeks ago and has already racked up 104 points to plant him in fifth place only 4 points ahead of newcomer Troy Kruse.
Who will be the Mini Stock Champion?? Your guess is as good as mine.
With his feature win on "double" points night last Saturday, Charlie Collins took over the points lead in the Super Stock division with 320 points but only 2 little points behind Collins is Ron Whaley who is determined to win the Championship for his beloved wife who passed away earlier this year. Ron will make Charlie really work to keep the points lead.
Jeff Colburn comes in at third in points with 224 points only 4 points over Josh Wronkowski, the early points leader, with 220 points. Mike Amato rounds out the top five with 124 points.
If you like beating and banging, these guys are the ones who do it. They put on an exciting show every week and this will be a very close battle for the championship.
