Kittleson - Sorenson Continue Battle for $50,000 Rookie Title | Pendleton, Ind. (May 20, 2003) – After suffering a setback at Lanier National Speedway, Travis Kittleson of Florida made a huge statement at Toledo in the Glass City 300. Kittleson finished in third position and now leads Georgia hotshot Reed Sorenson by 19 points in the $50,000 ASA Racing Series Rookie Championship.
Sorenson wheeled his No. 29 ACDelco Chevrolet to a sixth-place finish at Toledo’s .50-mile oval, marking his fifth top-10 finish of 2003. The green flag saw him in the second starting position along side Butch Miller. Sorenson began the season producing a career best third at USA International Speedway in the Jani-King 200.
Illiana Motor Speedway track champion Boris Jurkovic led his initial laps of his ASA career, but later in the event, the No. 66 Phil Hines Racing entry was involved in an altercation in Turn 2 that relegated him to a 23rd place finish. Jurkovic continues to rank third, behind Kittleson and Sorenson.
Davin Scites, in the No. 06 John Michael Montgomery Chevrolet is fourth in the freshman points after finishing 18th at Toledo. Scites was involved in two altercations with the second accident knocking him out of contention.
Texas youngster Casey Smith is fifth after mechanical problems forced the No. 08 Warranty Gold Chevrolet to spend many laps in the pit area for repairs. Smith scored his career best finish of third at the Lanier event previous to Toledo.
Pennsylvania competitor Ryan Hemphill holds down the sixth position in the $50,000 Rookie standings with Brett Sontag, Tracy Gordon, Stephen Leicht and Shane Sieg rounding out the rookie crop.
The sixth event of the 2003 ASA Racing Series is set for Saturday, May 24 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The ASA Racing Iowa 300 takes the green flag at 8 p.m. (Central).
